This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Recommendations: Favorite unusual game.

As a part of my desire to expand my games again (note: I always eventually run anything I own), I'm wanting to see a list of good--but unusual--games.

So have at it.

My current favorite is The Creep Chronicle, but that's largely because (despite a lot of typos) it stands out as the best and most unusual product in my current lot of review material. It's the PG successor to Little Fears.

My second recommendation would be Agone -- it's fantasy to be certain, but it's very baroque and the heroes are, by default, has-beens (not the up-and-comers so common in many fantasy RPGs).

Chi-Chian should get a mention, too. Despite Dan's RPGnet review, I found the system to work well for the setting. The setting is. . . well. . . I don't know if they come much weirder than that while remaining easily playable.

Promised Sands and Children are my favorite unusual games.

Plus a metric fuckton of Forgey games.

That's Rich's twisted little game. He's funny like that. :D

Can you deal with Forge games? If not, one of my current favorites in the unusual category is Steampunk Musha, an iteration of Iron Gauntlets.

Also, James is spot on, Agone is great, at least as far as the setting goes, and that definitely includes the maturity of the PCs.

Depends on the game. I don't rule out something because the Forge was involved in its creation, but usually I find them less capable of fulfilling the kinds of things I want from games. (I don't care for games so narrow they miss being interesting--"Breaking the Ice" completely useless and pointless for me for example.)

Probably Over the Edge; also for weird settings with their own homebaked systems I'm currently reading Promised Sands, and its pretty interesting.

It rocks on toast.

And the best part is: it shouldn't, not for me, but it does. If you told me, "Pierce, there's this VICTORIENTAL setting that's even MORE eclectic than your typical anime game, you MUST check it out," I'd punch you.

And yet, sometimes a game will sweep your prejudices aside. To play a shangti cowboy with a katana and two sixshooters who looks like Charles Bronson driving around in a steam-powered rikshaw with his clockwork geisha g/f by his side is the shiznit AFAIAC.

I certainly harbor a warm place in my heart for Tales from the Floating Vagabond.  There's nothing quite like taking the classic starting point "You meet in a tavern" and turning it into so pointed a celebration of public inebriation that the neighbors start to worry.
Superheroes with heart:  Capes!

Zachary The First

Steampunk Musha is definitely worth checking out.

I would also add Lacuna Part I to that list.  A creepy, surreal gaming experience.  Can't recommend it highly enough.

Definitely Bunnies & Burrows.

If you can't have fun as a sentient rabbit, I pity you, sir.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

I'd LURV to play that.

Unfortunatly LONG OOP and hard to find. For the record, stick to things that are gettable, unless you know a source.

Steampunk Musha sounds cool.

It's a great game in theory - but the authors took a humorous/cinematic combination, and then laid on top of it a seriously gritty RPG system that quantifies far too much for the genre.  I'm afraid there's a reason this one's out of print.
