This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Recommend Me Some Old School

Well, I did suggest moving it to another thread ...

But I think that, thanks to Ghost_Face, this little disagreement has played itself out...

Quote from: DeadUematsuI'm in the market for old school (or old-school like) products and would like some recommendations.

To help, here are a crop of old school products that I like: Talislanta, Atlantis, Palladium Fantasy 1st Edition, Tekumel, Wilderlands of High Fantasy, City State of the Invincible Overlord, Undermountain and Greyhawk Ruins (for the dungeon maps), Mazes and Minotaurs, B/X D&D, Castle and Crusades, Fantastic Treasures I and II, Monsters of Myth and Legend I, II, and III. I also like what I saw in Renegade Crowns and would totally use it for a WHQ game.

Now, what I don't want are any adventure scenarios, but if there are a lot of really good maps of dungeons or wilderness, I'd be willing to buy.

So, with that said, what should I get?

Tunnels and Trolls, fifth edition rather than seventh, despite all the years in the making seventh has a really rushed feel to it.

Star Wars D6 first edition, you'll need ebay for that.

Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes

Traveller, the classic version which is available on ebay or in current reprint.

2nd edition Runequest, again ebay.

Basically all those are relatively light, MSPE is crunchiest and that ain't that much crunch, freewheeling, easy to pick up and play and provide tools for the group to create their own fun rather than trying to create the fun via the game rules themselves.

And that baby is what old school is all about.  Old school gives you tools to have fun with, new school tells you how to have fun and doesn't work so well if you disagree.

When you mention Tekumel, do you mean Empire of the Petal Throne or Tékumel: Empire of the Petal Throne?
The original TSR version is certainly "Old School", the other, not so much.

Sounds like you want more fantasy oriented games. But Star Frontiers screams old school goodness to me. Especially when I'm burned out on hacking orcs. Its nice to mix it up and blast Sathar.

SkyRealms of Jorune is pretty old school.

I suppose I'd better weigh in with Villains and Vigilantes. Whatever you do, don't get the first edition.

What are the differences between first/second? (If it doesn't take to long to explain).

I always enjoyed Dragonquest as an alternative to DnD. Other than that, my fav was always Top Secret (before the "S. I." hooey).

The Good Assyrian

I have had good luck with using The Fantasy Trip of late for some Old Skool fun.  Dark City Games has even developed game called Legends based on classic TFT that is available for free download on their website.

Oh, and I almost forgot.  One Sci-Fi game that defines Old Skool for me was always Star Frontiers, which is now available in a spiffy new digitally remastered format at http://www.starfrontiersman.com/.

Like this list just swap Top Secret for James Bond and your there for me.

(I do like James Bond, but Top Secret is more Old school to me. That and the fond memories of it)

Very cool site. My buddy Kev freaked out when I showed him the site a couple months ago. Hes a big star frontiers fan from back in the day. After seeing it again, has been asking me to run something in it.

Yup cant go wrong with Gamma World. My buddy owned a comic shop. (Which recently closed.:( ) A couple months ago. He traded a guy for a bunch of stuff. Well he made his money back and then some on the battle tech stuf he sold fro the deal. So hes says to me "You liked Gamma World back in the day right?" And gives me a fourth edition. A very cool thing.:D
