This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: ColonelHardissonI'd rather RPG.net crap didn't get brought here either.

Sorry to continue the threadcrap, but I have to comment:

The Site That Shall Not Be Named is little more then a giant popularity clique of geeks.  Talking about them only makes them feel important.  Whether you say good things or bad does not matter.  It is my contention never to discuss them again (after this explanation).

I strongly suggest that everyone take that same stance.  Anything less only serves to throw gasoline on their fire.

I'd love to see just a solid, system-generic Honorverse sourcebook. I'm thinking I'd run it with GURPS all the way--or its possible you could tweak one of the incarnations of Traveller to work, but don't ask me which one.  StarCluster 2 might work as well.

Okay I'm going to ask the obvious question....

Who or what is Honor Harrington?

Zachary The First

From Wikipedia:

QuoteHonor Stephanie Harrington is a fictional character, the eponymous heroine of a series of science fiction books set in the "Honorverse", written by David Weber and published by Baen Books.
An officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy, the space navy of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, Harrington bears a striking professional resemblance to both the real life Admiral Lord Nelson, Captain Thomas Cochrane, and the fictional (composite) character Horatio Hornblower. Like Nelson, she loses an eye and an arm in combat; her initials are the same as Hornblower's, and like all three officers, she has a genius for tactical command throughout the series and becomes a living legend by using those skills in several major engagements—battles for which the press dubs her The Salamander—for always seeming to be "where the fire is hottest". By the tenth main-line novel (Ashes of Victory) Honor has emerged as a strategist of note as well, and has been promoted to Admiral in both the Manticoran and Grayson space navies.
Other parallels with real history include the political situation. During much of Harrington's career her native Star Kingdom of Manticore is at war with the neighboring People's Republic of Haven, a conflict that bears more than passing resemblance to the antagonism between the British Empire and France during the Napoleonic Wars. Last but not least, Weber references the author of Hornblower within the series on at least one occasion, a minor instance of "breaking the fourth wall", as an homage.

I think of it like Horatio Hornblower...in Spaaaace!  However, some of the chracters are a little 2-D, but the battle scenes, new tech development, and strategy are a blast to read.[/B]

Sounds like there's bound to be some Honor Harrington/Richard Sharpe fan fiction out there...

I've read the Sharpe series and enjoyed them so do you think I'll enjoy Honor Harrington, if so where should I start?

What would work well would be StarCluster 2 with an overlay of the In Harm's Way special rules - honor/practicality, voluntary wounding, and the like. The space battle/weapons from StarCluster wouldn't work at all. I'd probably strip them out and replace it with the broadside-based system from IHW, but with funky new names. It would actually be a dead easy kitbash.

Pick up "On Basilisk Station." It's the first in the "Honor Harrington" series. If it hooks you, then you'll like the series. If not, you're not likely to enjoy the rest of the series. The series moves chronologically, so we see Honor get older and climb through the ranks, and watch as galactic politics change. She aquires quite a retinue of followers, friends, and family as time goes by, and the backstory becomes more complex. So start at the beginning, which many consider one of the, if not the, best in the series.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

I'd like to see such a sourcebook also. GURPS, Traveller, 2300, and d20 Modern/Future are all good candidates for such a game. For that matter, I'd say Alternity could do the job.

"On Basilisk Station" is freely available from the Baen Free Library, by the way. (bad frame page. Go to Authors / David Weber)

I'll try reading it as soon as my boss is gone ;)

Yeah, I was forgetting that. Baen also included free CD ROMs with a couple of the more recent hardbacks, that contained all of the HH books for free, as well as many other books by Weber and other authors.

Yeah, I picked up the Saganami Tactical Simulator boardgame and it cam with a CD with all of the currently printed HH books on it. Pretty sweet deal and a great game.
