This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I did a search, but the last podcast thread I could find is five years old, so here goes:

I am new to the whole podcast scene.  Are there any good RPG-related podcasts I should check out?  Ones that are preferably not limited to D&D and/or the fantasy genre?

Here is one for Traveller:

I dunno how good it is, matter of taste... some voices grate on some people. I enjoy listening to Save Or Die (early D&D focused) despite the main host's nasaly OCD approach.

The Good Assyrian

I enjoy Fear The Boot quite a bit.  I have gotten some very good ideas from them over the years and the cast is entertaining if nothing else.

I'm quite fond of Ken and Robin Talk about Stuff, which covers generally whatever they feel like talking about or possibly whatever new book they have coming out.  They discuss games, books, history, movies, cooking, writing, maps, and whatever else.  They stay pretty on-topic and don't sit around and "uh" and "ah" a bunch, plus they keep each topic down to a short period of time so you're not sitting there bored out of your mind.

I like the D6 Generation. It's a long podcast and they talk about a mix of board games, miniature games and RPGs but it is generally pretty entertaining.

Do you want podcasts about RPGs, or those featuring people playing RPGs?

If the latter, In Sanity We Trust Productions features a lot of games that aren't D&D. We're playing the new Werewolf: the Forsaken 2nd edition right now, for example.
Currently running: Tyche\'s Favourites, a historical ACKS campaign set around Massalia in 300BC.

BGG's RPGG side has a podcast section.

You'll have to sort the dross from the good. But should keep you busy. Start with the ones with the better ratings.

Arise, thread!

Acknowledging the big long lists linked above, what are your top recommendations in podcasts?

And, does anyone know of any podcasts in the vein of Happy Jack's, but without the unceasing belching?  I kept waiting for them to get it out of their system, and they just don't.  Seriously, a mute button, or a 5 second edit, or just don't face the mike, but nope, gotta be out and proud.  Which is a shame, because I'd have liked to get through an actual play.

In the meantime I'll check out Behind the Claw and In Sanity We Trust.

I'm already aware of Fear the Boot, and like it well enough, but it pretty much meets my daily recommended allowance of inside baseball and banter, and I'd like to find something more focused.

Voros

Not into Live Plays, I find listening to someone play a session akin to having someone recite a dream they had to you.

I prefer podcasts that are well produced (i.e. well recorded) and don't waste my time with endless in-jokes, hosts laughing at each other jokes and telling us endless stories about what they did for the weekend.

GM Word of the Weeks by the Angry GM and Fiddleback is pretty great, short and often funny, very well researched and nicely produced.

The Grognard Files, by a couple of English blokes is a bit rambling but here it is actually charming and they have a lot of interesting things to actually say about old system's mechanics and ideas. They also have the advantage of not just covering D&D but Runequest, Stormbringer, Traveller, Coc, T&T. And despite the name they are not embittered 'get off my lawn!' types.

The Tome Show, Tabletop Babble and DM's Deep Dive are all well-done 5e oriented podcasts.

For storygames The Gauntlet is good, either focused intelligent interviews or a round-table where they discuss new games they've been playing.

System Mastery is closer to a comedy podcast where they find an old out-of-print RPG and usually proceed to take the piss out of it.

Unfortunately there aren't any really good OSR podcasts imo, too much shitty recording quality and people rambling about random bullshit. Particularly annoying was one podcast where they have important D&D designers like David 'Zeb' Cook and other on but make them sit through their babble and even listener comments before getting around to asking them questions, then proceed to talk over them a bunch. Blah.

Thanks Asen. I keep them pretty crude and don't edit so don't expect anything more than me talking for 10-20 minutes.

I have a few favorites.

Spellburn and Glowburn: These are DCC and MCC specific podcasts, respectively.  Glowburn is new, obviously, since MCC isn't out yet, but Spellburn has 40+ episodes so far.  Spellburn is, in my opinion, the best produced podcast I've ever listened to.  The structure of each episode is great, the hosts are very balanced, the sound transitions are entertaining.  Not much use if you aren't into DCC, but it is my absolute favorite podcast.  I've listened to every episode, and several more than once.

Drink Spin Run: This podcast has a new guest every episode (usually), and they discuss beer, music, books, and gaming.  They're definitely biased towards OSR gaming (and DCC specifically gets brought up a lot), but they readily discuss a wide variety of games (even Fate got an actual play episode).

Designers & Discourses: Kind of defunct now, but the six episodes on there are fantastic.  Hosted by Jim Wampler, former host of Spellburn, current designer of MCC, each episode interviews an industry figure.  He's interviewed Michael Curtis, Tim Kask, James M Ward, Harley Stroh, James Raggi, and Luke Crane.  Every episode is worth listening to.

The Good Friends of Jackson Elias: They just celebrated their 100th episode.  The first episodes coincide with the release of Call of Cthulhu 7th edition and begins with some rules overviews for the new edition.  The podcast though covers CoC, horror literature, gaming, and movies in general.  Episodes are more hit or miss, for me, than the others listed, depending on topic, but overall it's a great podcast if you've got any interest in weird horror.
