This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Racing RPGs?

I love racing games.  I've been playing the Gran Turismo games since I was a lad, Forza 3 is a fixture in my home, I love cars and racing and Top Gear and all that shit, and I've been recently thinking I'd really love to get into watching Formula 1 if only I could get it here.

Part of this I suspect is because I personally can't do any of this in real life (for both monetary and health reasons), which of course makes me think it'd be perfect for an RPG somehow.

There's a lot of drama and action in a professional car race, which according to Phillip is what Gygax says RPGs are all about.

But has anyone tackled the subject at all?

Can't think of any, but maybe Clash's Baseball RPG could serve as some sort of model to build a sports-related RPG?

Since many action-adventure TV shows are often said to be similiar to a typical RPG campaign as in "4 to 5 hero characters having adventures" - then it might be said the TV show "SPEED RACER" is basically an RPG campaign premise.

The 'player characters' are the Racer family and their allies.

Car Wars by SJG had a racing supplement. You could couple it with GURPS: Autoduel and get a RPG.

After seeing the Speed Racer movie I wanted to add something similar to one of my settings.

What I came up with is the planet Benediction which will be part of Incandescent's setting.

Benediction is the Detroit of known space.  An industrial world that has slowly deteriorated into a very low grade / high risk pleasure planet and the only place where there is Track Shocker Racing.

10 000 kilometers of electrically charged track, with a pair of monorail riptrams that carry audiences parallel to the tracks so they can follow the action.  The racers do not carry an independant power supply and are required to draw power off the track into a capacitor.  Most have high yield mag lifts to allow them to leap over small collisions.

The track is powered by no less than ten industrial fusion reactors allowing multiple heats to be run similtaneously, usually at four hour intervals.

I ran a Car Wars RPG years ago using Champions/Robot Warriors system whic was cool.  There was a D20 Mad Maxish game, but I don't remember the name.

Sadly its a while before my transforming giant robot rally/race game is done. (Low to no violence, racing themes...)

Autoduel Champions was a supplement put out a zillion years ago which put the whole Car Wars "thing," into Hero system format - could be useful for what you may have in mind*

* = note, I've only seen this thing once or twice in real life; never used or played it so its actual usefulness may be iffy
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

Actually, it would translate rather well to racing. Much better than - say - football of either type. My ex-brother in law was a race car driver. He raced Indy, NASCAR, and Busch as well as mods and super mods, so I know a bit about it.
