This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Race Portrayls That You Don't Like

So, what games out there have portrayed Elves, Halflinfs, Gnomes, Orcs, Dwarves, Demihuman Bird Race A, Demihuman Lizard Race F, or subraces thereof, in a manner you didn't care for?

Me, I loved the halflings in Dark Sun (cannibals, don't you know), but I hate gully dwarves in Dragonlance.  Something about it just didn't sit well with me.  I love goblins in Eberron (why shouldn't they have their own nation?-one of the few bts of Ebrron I like), but I despise Whisper Gnomes from Races of Stone, which go against how I think gnomes ought to work as a race in my games.

Halflings are hobbits, let's not make them Kender.
Amen.  Pretty much all the Dragonlance stuff is cutesy and annoying.

I don't quite like standard D&D dwarves and elves; I wish they were more like northen European myth and less like Tolkien ripoffs.

Why do we need subraces of elves, dwarves, and whatever?  Why can't they be just one race with regional variations in culture?  One of the things I hate about FR is the adding on of new uber versions of existing races just so the setting can continually top itself and give wanker players new favorite races.

Drow were ok as villains with weapons that were worthless to steal.  But when every third PC is a "lone good drow" it goes beyond silly.

Rather than rainbow colored dragons, each with its own stereotype, I'd prefer just 1-3 dragon types but with a normal range of personalities.

Gnomes as good-natured pranksters bugs the hell out of me. I see them more as gun-toting unscrupulous merchants and such. Gnomes have all the moneys. And guns. Because gnome hooked hammers are so fucking stupid.

Elven subraces for teh lose. Hell... longer lifespans, slower birthrates, and smaller "hidden" populations do not make for racial diversity!

Likewise for dwarves.

But I just loooove me some half-giants. I have no idea why, though. Oh, right... THEY'RE HALF GIANTS. Win.

Zachary, I agree that Gully Dwarves are unsettling.  Some of the very little game fiction I've ever read was the earliest Dragonlance books, and I kinda got the impression that gully dwarves were an easy way to poke fun at retarded people.

I have yet to find non-human PC races I don't have issues with.  I don't like dwarves or elves or halflings, or any of the other semi-human races.

I'll take elves back, they can be neato, and my own setting has them, but I usually have them as unusualy lithe humans with pointed ears.

I agree with Nicephorus in that more racesshould be based in myth.

I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!
Which is ridiculous \'cause witches they were persecuted Wicca good and love the earth and women power and I'll be over here.

I think K'Kree are stupid. The hivers should manipulate them  back to the stone age.

I didn't like the races/cultures in Sovereign Stone. I just can't see dwarves as pony-riding mongols.

I don't like subraces, I'm with those who say just the race with different cultures is fine.

I like new halflings better. I've never had in problem with kender, but hobbits are best left to Tolkien IMO. Plus, 3.x halflings don't seem like kender to me in any way but appearance. On the other hand, if halflings were to be left out of a campaign, that wouldn't bother me either.

Don't like tinker gnomes, do like prankster gnomes. Especially if they often have a nasty side. Like big pixies. Without wings.

Hmm...I'd never really thought of that angle before.  I just know they don't sit well with me.  They and kender have never had a place at my table.

I dislike 99.9% of the way Elves are portrayed in roleplaying games.

Yeah, that, of all things, one ought to have to work at.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.
