This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Hrugga;1039973Fantastic. Thank you. Was he the only non-human? One last thing, what was the little guy's name?

Jim Garrison and Joe Zottola played Shen, Victor Raymond a Pe Choi, and Dave the Tinaliya; that's all I know of. I can check the database, both to see if there are any more and for his name.

Uncle,

Sounds great.

Quote from: chirine ba kal;1039961Well, as if getting my ass chewed yesterday wasn't bad enough, I also found out that the One And Only Tinaliya in Phil's campaign, Dave Romm, passed away unexpectedly and unremarked last September. He and I may not have agreed on a lot of things, but I will miss the guy; Phil was never, ever able to get him to break character.
May he rest in peace!

Quote from: chirine ba kal;1039967What makes it worse, for me anyway, was that he seems to have passed away on Sept. 7th, and nobody noticed for a week. He was finally found on the 14th, I gather. Says something about what local fandom has become, in my biased opinion; when something like this happens, or like Will Shetterly and Emma Bull being banned from the convention that they founded, then what used to be a community has become something else.

Anyway...

Dave wanted to play a Tinaliya, and Phil thought it would be funny if he did. So, he got added to our party, and the fun began. We all treated him like he was one, and he was - he was perfect, all the time. He read everything about the little folk that Phil had, and took off at a dead run with it. He never broke character while he was at the table, and played a Tinalya perfectly. We'd refer 'technological' problems to him, as per usual Tsolyani practice, and he'd come up with an answer that made perfect sense in Tekumel terms and which would catch Phil completely off guard; Dave had read L. Sprague De Camp's book on ancient and medieval engineering, and had it all down cold. Phil had to really scramble to catch up, and it was a joy to watch.

The Tinaliya was also very polite and helpful, but you alway knew that he was just that little bit smug and superior for simply being a Tinaliya - he was helping the humans out of their latest predicament because he was a noble being, but also to show off a little bit that they were just that little bit better then we humans were. Both Kathy and Ken picked up on this in their artwork - Dave was the one who come up with the natty weskits with their pockets full of tools and serving as a form of padded cloth armor, which has stayed with us ever since.

He will be playing a major part in TSTPT, in books 5 and 6; there is some of that already, but there will be a lot more to come. He was the one who coined the Tinaliya motto: "Solutions, in search of problems."

Sounds like a great player! He deserved to be better-known.
Alas, I guess that wasn't a priority for people who popularize the setting.

And the part with banning the creators makes no sense either.

Quote from: chirine ba kal;1039977Last year, from Fourth Street Fantasy; somebody complained about Will, he asked what was going on, and the concom banned him and Emma permanently. Steve Brust tried to address the issue in his speech at opening ceremonies, and got shut down by the Safety Director. I found out about this in the middle of the past week, entirely by accident, and have been trying to piece it together since. Looks like new people on the concom having a personal grudge against the old fogies, as near as I can tell.

Normally, you know I'd say that things aren't that bad, as you know:)!
I'm currently in a foul mood, though. So let me try something else;).

Uncle,

So I asked my wife of twenty years about the "questionable" image you used in your game flyer. She was perplexed as to why. She's clothed. So she asks me is it because she sits on the falcon throne? I say I have no idea. For reference, I show her an image of Aleena the Cleric in chainmail. She shakes her head and laughs. Wife then asks if I am going to let people make me crazy...!!!

So Uncle it seems your games should be your rules in your house(Workbench). It is a sad story. But I think those that  want to know about the Ye Olden Days will find their way to your table. That way if they object, they can leave. You should only answer to the wife...!!!

P.S. I wish I was closer to the Workbench. Head up. You fight the good fight.

This makes me sad on multiple levels. Hate that yet another hand from the old days has gone away. And I hate to hear of someone dying and going unnoticed for a length of time like that.

You and you're damn reading of books! You know young people don't read nowadays, nor would they read something so old, especially since it doesn't re-enforce their preconceptions!

In the Professor's novels, it seems to be implied that eyes fit perfectly into Tinaliya hands, like they invented or built them originally. Is that something you guys came across or discovered?

And on the subject of non-humans, do the Hlaka trade their firepots? One of my players snagged a few from a dead flyer and really gets a thrill from them. As a Worshiper of Vimulha they are double-awesome to him. The group refers to them a Hlaka Hotpots
There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can do math and those that can\'t.

Yep. GWR through Minety in Wiltshire, with a Brunel station and all.

There's a level crossing just up the line; goods shed, signal box controlling the signals (working ones from Ratio, of course), what's not to like? That fence is still there too; the cormer post is a section of broad-gauge flanged rail from the original line laid by IKB.

Thank you for the kind words. As near as I can tell, the person giving me the razzing assumed that the costume was topless, which it ain't; her husband tried to point this out to her, and she blew him off. She that announced that the woman in the picture had probably been paid less then any men were, and the poor guy tried to explain that this is ms. Claudette Colbert, who was the 1930's version of Catherine Zeta-Jones, and most likely was getting as much money as all the male actors in the movie put together. She blew him off on that, too, and the conversation went downhill from there.

I suspect you're right. People seem to be able to find me - I make no attempt to hide - and if anyone wants to come along on the epic journey that The Missus and I have been on for some thirty years they are certainly welcome to.

Yep; I'm still astonished that nobody seemed to care enough to do a welfare check. But then that kind of disinterest and neglect is how I got those five daughters...

I'm going to keep on citing useful texts until I'm dead. If people can't be bothered to read them, they can get stuffed.

We did notice that they did have a lot of Eyes, and were quite able to use them - beyond that, Phil would not go, but I think you'd be on safe ground there...

Yes. I've bought a lot of them, over the years, as they are just too damn handy not to keep around in the arsenal. Surprised a few folks with them, too... :)

P.S. I wish I was closer to the Workbench. Head up. You fight the good fight.

I find myself shaking my head over the whole thing.

The 1976 World SF Convention featured skinny dipping in the pool.  A woman entered the masquerade as Dejah Thoris, wearing leather straps and a little drape the size of a washcloth, and nothing else.

The 1970s saw the sexual/feminist revolution expand "Wives like to fuck too" to "nice girls like to fuck too."  Approximately 25% of the incoming freshman women at the U of Minnesota got a prescription for birth control pills within the first two weeks of fall semester.

Eldritch Wizardry has a naked woman tied to an altar on the cover.

What's funny in kind of a sad bitter way is that the bloke Chirine talks about who threatened to have him banned from the FLGS if he brought in nude figures... has, or at least had, according to a reliable witness, a rather extensive collection of porn videos.

As for the woman who complained about Claudette Colbert, some years ago she went off on the movie "Splash" for much the same reason.  Despite the fact that the mermaid has magical powers and can do stuff humans can't.

Were I a cad, I would suggest maybe she has an issue with women who are more powerful than her and prettier than her.
