This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ugh. I hate you purists; I hate your small mindedness in the face of a new idea or take on something. You are diminishing my hobby with your attitudes.

Witness:

QuoteThis piece of crap is nothing more then an exercise is taking the cash of gulible Cthulhu fans. Perhaps in future you should stick to games you actually have some knowledge of rather then something they know next to nothing about.

This was posted on ukroleplayers.com in a thread slagging off the forthcoming Cthullhutech rpg. To be fair the designers have focussed rather too heavily on the giant mechs and the art involved, but most people who have been following this know there is much more to it.

Now you may not like the look of the game and the game may well prove to be a clunker.

But a piace of crap that's nothing more than an exercise in ripping people off?

Get fucking real!

Somone comes along with a new idea: in this case a new twist on the Lovecraft mythos (it's not even a twist, it's Cthulhu in the future) and all people can do is behave like pompous buffoons.

This helps the hobby how?

Balbinus

Those people would rather the hobby died pure than lived with a bit of mud on it.  Fuck 'em.

Me, that particular game sounds odd to me conceptually, but it may rock and if it doesn't I shall exercise the awesome and terrible power of not buying it.

I use that power a lot these days, I find it makes things much easier.

But yeah, there are too many folk out there for whom anything new is anathema,

I couldn't finish that last sentence, my irony alarms started ringing really hard when I remembered some posters here's views on new games.

signoftheserpent

BY all means not like something, but that's a million miles from the purists' attitude.

Dare i tell them the world is round?

beeber

cthulhutech seems a neat concept, but i don't care for the mechanics of it (the little i've read about, that is).

there's no need to trash something like that, tho.  take the stuff you like, leave the rest.

why can't we all just get along?

some people. . . .

Sosthenes

I like my beer pure, mix up the rest. But don't fear, the trend is reversing. Gaming (and genre literature) started pretty weird, got stream-lined but we're entering a new era of mash-ups.

Chtulululuhutech? Well, that's not even new, so I don't know what they're complaining about.

Dr Rotwang!

I don't like the sound of Cthulhutech, but I'm sure my great-grandparents weren't down with that whole "horseless carriage" jazz themselves.

In other words, I'll enjoy playing my game and you'll enjoy playing yours and that's purity, damnit.

It's just elitism of the worst kind really: Call of Cthulhu (in fact probably that mroe than Lovecraft's actual work) is highbrow and respectable. But giant robot mecha is childish cartoon crap.

Ignoring that there is a great deal more to the game than just giant cthlhu mechs (which are pboably the last thing in the game that would ever be playable anyways).

What makes it so sad is that neither are the subjects of nobel prizes or pulitzers oscars or grammys etc.

They games played by geeks. Get over it!

I remember years ago, a GURPS supplement was released for Cthulhupunk - cyberpunk cthulhu.  Personally, I thought that was a stellar idea but never did pick up the sourcebook... largely because I don't play GURPS...

Balbinus, as usual, speaks wisdom here.

If you (as in the general "You" not anyone specifically) don't like a game, don't buy it.  Someone out there not only probably thinks it is cool, but thinks that Your Favorit Game (TM) sucks goat ass as well.  So have a little humility, and realize that all art is 90% subjective, not everyone's going to like everything, and your cup of tea may very well be the next guy's trough of offal.

Me, I think Cthulhutech does not look very interesting.  It flies in the face of my perception of Lovecraft's work, and additionally, I really don't like Giant Mecha games/films/whatever.  So, I'm just not going to be buying it.  That said, one of my best friends is frothing at the mouth for C-Tech, and I'm thrilled for him!  He's very enthusiastic about it, and I'm happy that someone's doing a game that he's that exited about.

Har.  Never heard that one before.

Yes, one man's fish is another man's poisson, as they say...

Balbinus may counter with "One man's Mede is another man's Persian," but I'm betting he has more taste than that...
