This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Pundit Goes Apeshit over Actual Quote From Storygames

Quote from: Christmas ApeTo weigh in on the side of demons, they are however useful for discussing statements, positions, and opinions held by the Forge-believing crowd.

Since nothing makes Pundit happier than finding something they said he can spew about, running it over here and railing to all the world why their games suck, they're likely to remain in use for some time. If you can convince him and everyone else not to drag their arguments over here, even so they can yell at them without getting banned from their forums, then the usage of those terms will drop off, and maybe even vanish.

For as long as he wants to give airtime to their viewpoints, even to offer rebuttal, people are going to have to be able to speak a little bit of their language.

No, they won't. Around here, we don't accept any statement that begins with the word "narrativism..." unless it is followed by something along the lines of "...is bullshit".

That party game sounds a lot like RISUS, actually.

Which is funny, because you can basically run RISUS from memory.

Do you know I really worry about using coins because of the difficulty of picking them off the table for a second throw.

Really - like, the worry strikes me in the middle of the night.
Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

Quote from: SettembriniHey guys, please stop using Forge-isms here. Thank ya all.

They are not useful for discussing different RPGs, especially in regards of how they are actually played. Take it to the design and theory forae, if needed.

Assuming you were referring to me,

1. The point of my post was to examine Mike Holmes' entire post, not just the bit pundit quoted, which required quoting him, including all that naughty forge jargon he used. Seems to me if you're quoting someone, you should in fact quote them.

2.  You'll note that in my paraphrasing and discussion of his quotes, I made every attempt to indicate when a word was being used as forge jargon, either by putting quotation marks around it, or by appending the phrase (in the forge sense).

3. Holmes also used "narration" in the normal sense of the word when drawing a distinction between "narration" and "narrativism" (the forge jargon), , as did I when I referenced that quote. That use of "narration" on my part was neither quoted nor appended with "(in the forge sense)". I'm assuming using "narration", "game" and "simulation", and any other words co-opted by the forge as jargon, in the normal, non-forge senses of the words is still okay.

You may now return to the productive section of the thread.

Speaking of which, I think the mechanics from OTE would fit the bill. You could fit them on a single sheet.

What I'm getting here is "If I bring over a Forge-related statement from my hungry prowling of Swine message boards, I want you all to leap up and start spitting on it with me. None of this rational 'You may be, intentionally or not, misinterpreting their words based on your rampant hatred of everything they stand for and it's possible they meant this other pretty evident thing' bullshit, just follow along with what I say."

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

That's...real special, chief, but somehow I don't think you've got enough groupthink to manage it. I think the terms are useless for people who play RPGs, but for the people who communicate with each other on the Forge, they seem to serve the place of real words. If you're going to talk about them to any purpose other than "Ha ha! I personally disagree, making them empirically wrong! :pundit:" - which is wankery - then the terms are simply going to come up. If you want to drag their verbal sacks of shit over onto your lawn, you can't bitch the flies came with them and now it smells bad over here.

I'm not for accepting the use of Forge terms, I'm for the abandoning of this stupid-ass petty "Look how wrong this quote from another site I have no business on is!" shit that makes a large portion of the potential user base turn away with a condescending smirk at having found another Anti-Forge board.

Exactly.

But if the Pundit, wants this place to become the Iraq of his War on Theory, by all means, carry on .

I've generally found the posting population of ENWorld to be fairly hostile to Forge concepts. That may have changed, I stopped all that crazy 3.x shit a while ago.

Cool thanks for that. One question, though: what's this bullshit about "quote from another site I have no business on"? Who has no business on which site, and why? Are we not to go to sites where people largely disagree with us? Does that mean we won't be seeing any more of Christmas Ape here on therpgsite?

I think that it's good to be around people who disagree with you. It keeps ideas fresh, keeps people awake - both you as the "outsider", and the people on the site. Sure, there's a level of consistent disagreement where you've no common ground whatsoever, and there are people who get disagreement, and turn nasty, like here, so there comes a point where it's better just to walk away. But on the whole... a good chunk of disagreement is good.

I mean, what's the alternative? "I'm sorry, before you check Das Kapital out of the library I have to ask for your Communist Party card. And that book about war? Yeah, I want to see a service record. You have no business reading things if you disagree with them."

Seconded. I lay the blame on the posters, myself - due to their antisocial behaviour, not enough cool, mainstream people come here. If we didn't have so many irritating twits in attendance, TheRPGSite could achieve mainstream recognition and attract real, mainstream people. A worthwhile goal, hindered by all these basement-dwelling troglodytes!

I generally feel if there's no way you could engage in actual conversation with the participants of a message board - like, say, Pundit with the population of StoryGames - you don't really have any reason to read it. You're basically just eavesdropping at that point. YMMV.

For the record, the conversation at this place makes more sense to me than other RPG boards, I just find the occasional descent into jabbering chimpdom frustrating. There are, mostly, some smart people here who love the hobby of roleplaying games. What makes us pull this crazy high school bullshit?
