This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Thinking about quitting my group ...

I'm thinking about quitting my current group.

Last spring the group coalesced in order to play D&D 3.5 ('Age of Worms' to be precise).  We met almost every Tuesday, and it was 'solid' (not 'great', but enjoyable enough).  Since I was a player, it didn't involve much prep work on my part, so I was happy to go along.  Unfortunately, that campaign was aborted after a couple of months, as the DM suffered a family tragedy and lacked the will to continue.

A couple of months pass, the DM wants to play again (though not run a game), and most of the other players seem interested as well.  So I volunteer to run True 20 (using 'Freeport' because of its generic nature and the fact that the first adventure is already converted to True20, and is free).

We had one session, and it went quite well.  But that's been it.  And now I think that I'd just as soon let the thing die.

There are a few reasons for this.

1. I just don't feel that excited about the Freeport adventure series.  Don't get me wrong -- I think it's quite good.  But I'm just not in the mood for it right now.

2. My schedule is making it hard for me to find time for gaming during the week.  On any given weekday night, I'm either busy with work (prepping lectures, going to conferences/talks, etc.), or too tired to GM.  Being a tired player is one thing, but as a GM I need a lot more energy.  Adding to the problem is the fact that I have to take the train south to Dalkey (about a 30 minute ride from Dublin) for the sessions.  Playing on weekends would be much better, but I doubt that that will happen with this group.

3. The other players (aside from the ex-DM) aren't really 'friends', so I don't feel a deep commitment to, or bond with, them.  I've got nothing against them, as they are all decent guys.  But frankly, I doubt that I would hang out with them outside of a gaming context (the ex-DM is the one important exception; I consider him a friend, and he was a great help when I first moved to Dublin).

So, rather than dragging my feet on this and contemplating the possibility that I might 'get my act together', I'm starting to think that I should simply call it quits.  I should simply explain to players that I just don't have the time or energy to run a game these days.

I feel somewhat bad about this.  Especially as I've also just been invited to join another group (as a player), and the games they're running sound quite interesting.  (And they meet closer to home, and they have a semi-regular fortnightly schedule, etc.)  But really, I think that that invitation just made me realise that I'm rather 'meh' about gaming with my current group.

Hmmm ... :(

You said it yourself: you're not that close with your current group.  You won't break any hearts if you go, and you'll just drag down a game you don't want to play in.

Go.

Yeah, I guess that the solution is clear.  I still feel somewhat bad, though, as I really enjoy GMing and can't help but feel as though I'm letting these folks down ... :(

Bail. You're letting them down by having offered a game, and not giving it to them - you dirty tease! - but would be letting them down even more by persisting when they could find someone who's actually interested in them. Don't waste people's time, we're not immortal.

You know what you have to do. There can be only one.
