Title: Pre-Printed Paper Miniatures...
Post by: brettmb on August 25, 2008, 12:11:52 AM
Now that I'm doing my own in-house printing, I've also been providing pre-printed paper miniatures with the new miniatures games like New World Disorder and the Zombie Apocalypse add-on -- just cut and fold. I already offer a big book of pre-printed fantasy figures (640 all-together), but I'm considering small sets that can be ordered separately. For example, a regular downloadable set (30 figures) could be purchased as a pre-printed set with two of each figure for a total of 60 figures for perhaps the same price--$3.95 (+S/H). You could then add-on 30 plastic bases for $8.95.

What do you think? Too few minis? I've been wracking my brains trying to figure out what would work best.

In case you're not familiar with what I'm talking about, you can find out more here (http://www.pigames.net/store/default.php?cPath=27&).

Oh...OH!!!

(Now the sleepy Klingon-guy gets it)

You are referring to what SJ Games calls CARDBOARD HEROES!!

 Cool.
Very cool.

I like those kinds of things - just don't get to use them so much. There seems to be a snobbery of gamers preferring pre-painted plastics and pewter miniatures and the like.

ADDED at 2:18am: If I came up with a picture or sketch - could you do minis/heroes set for that Martian rebellion idea I had a while back?

I think it would be cool. Especially for the budget conscious, but I might thematically tie together some. (Heck publishing some "adventure" synopsis pamphlets with them might add to their value.)

I like the idea of 60 figures for that price, its not much, and mailing shouldn't be too high for cardboard minis. What's in the big book? :D

Koltar, they are basically Cardboard Heroes, but the original versions are available as downloadable/customizable sets. Much more economical and flexible, especially if you have a nice color printer.

I'm either not familiar with or don't remember your Martian rebellion idea, Koltar. If you PM me with the data or provide a link, I'll look into it...

Silverlion, the "big" book (http://www.pigames.net/store/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=275) :) includes five fantasty sets (four copies of each figure) -- heroes, undead, humanoids, villains, and HARP(tm) for a total of 160 unique figures and 640 in total. The book is spiral-bound, so you can open it flat when cutting out figures, and the binding keeps all the pages intact. Could you explain more about adventure synopsis pamphlets -- I understand the gist of what you mean, but I'd like a little more clarification if you could.

I printed out a test set (WWII Soldiers) in a variety of ways, but the best is essentially a four-paged, bagged set. All figures all duplicated, except for four, of which there are four copies of each (sniper and three machine guns). So in this instance, the printed set would actually include 68 figures. Then $3.95 sounds OK to you guys?

Fantastic idea, as far as I'm concerned. I would be a buyer.

ooo... I might have a new D&D game starting up soon and don't have minis. $27 for a bunch of pre-printed paper fantasy minis is a great deal.

I'm working on getting some 4E sets done -- you know, with the serial numbers filed off :)

Anything I can tailor for a sci-fi game, so I guess the sci-fi set :)

That's rather specific to HardNova, although some figures can be used as generic. I've got some more sci-fi sets in the queue.

I've nerver found a good set of paper minis (or any other minis) for a modern Horror game (think WoD, vampire, Mage, Werewolf...stuff like that). I would totally buy a set of modern horror minis.

Although a decent set of modern minis would probably suffice.

I'd buy for that price, depending on how much it would cost to ship to .au (always a killer for me)

Here's a further question. The Disposable Heroes downloadable versions come in three formats--a-frame stand-up, tri-fold stand-up, and flat counter. The a-frames would be the only version available in print, since they are the most common and I really recommend the plastic bases to give them excellent stability.

However, I know some people use flat counters - I can print these as cardboard counters that you you just have to cut out. Is there any interest in this or is it primarily in stand-ups?

Assuming you mean Australia, it would be approximately $5US.

I prefer the A fram or trifold. (Loved the trifold in MSH) but A-frames work just as well. Counters aren't as usable for me, since the primary use is going to be to avoid using counters/pennies for positioning.

Silverlion, I kind of agree about the counters, but some people like to use them.

I'd likely get some of the 4e ones, actually.

Also, the demand might be low, but what about some kind of science fantasy sets, like for Mutant Future, Gamma World, Thundarr type games?

There's a set in the works for EarthAD, which is post-apocalypse.

I need more 40k knockoffs!  Only ones I've found so far as some knock off Imperial Guard (http://www.onemonk.com/SF018-TF-Urban-OPS-team.html) at One Monk, and they're in PDF, which I still think is frankly silly to pay for.

On the subject of format and whatnot, I do really like One Monk's approach of essentially making 25mm bases in cardboard form.  They even do square ones and trays for the fantasy lines.  Keeps the paper minis in line with the standards for real minis.

I use Disposable Heroes, along with a mishmash of old Mage Knight figures, 25mm painted, and Fiery Dragon counters.  For me, the most useful sort of set would be like 50 orcs or 50 kobolds pre-printed--a Horde Pack, if you will.  Let me have enough where I can do truly epic, HUGE battles without ever running out of bad guys grunts. :)  This would be fantastic!

Hordes? Sounds doable. I'll look into it. You can already do that now if you don't mind printing them yourself.

A pirates set should be available in the next few days for those interested. Probably a modern or Supers set after that.

So, no interest in cardboard counters then?

I'd totally pay to spare me the slight hassle of printing them myself. :)

I'm more interested in stand-ups then counters right now.  My big beef with my counters is that they can get pushed under one another, hidden, etc.

I'm commissioning art for the fantasy hordes. Zachary, you mentioned orcs and kobolds. What else do you need? Skeletons, goblins?

The pirate set is now available, if anyone is interested.

I released an experimental Printed Set - WWII Soldiers (http://www.pigames.net/store/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=434). It includes 136 figures (30 unique; both U.S. and German troops) pre-printed on quality cardstock in full color. Add on our plastic bases and you've got a great combo.

I'll probably make a western or American Revolution printed set next, as the fantasy hordes get created.

Thanks.

I'll be releasing Fantasy 4E Core Classes by the end of the month -- 30 figures of the common class and race combinations. Three versions: Statix Downloadable, Customizable Downloadable, and Pre-Printed.

The Fantasy Hordes are in the works.

Not sure. Depending on player mind states, tomorrow..! (More seriously, I doubt I'll get D&D off this time, so most likely next friday, or the one after that.) No need to really rush them though. I'm kinda broke.

That would be it. I was clicking on the thumbnails on the page. (Which makes more sense where to put a preview to me) than the (somewhat busy) sidebar.

These look fantastic--when will the full set be available?
