This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I don't think these guys are gamers, but they have picked up on WoTC/Hasbro saying Orcs are black people and old D&D is therefore racist

NotFromAroundHere

I always find the American tendency of considering their social quirks, political landscape and peculiar relationship with anything "race" related as universal constants of humanity absolutely hilarious.
I'm here to talk about RPGs, so if you want to talk about storygames talk with someone else.

You mean American white people.

Most of us don't really care.  But progressive do-gooders can't leave anything alone.  Racism is everywhere, didn't you know?
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

Carl (guy on the right) knows some Warhammer 40k, and has dabbled in online D&D and Vampire sessions which were streamed. Him, Short Fat Otaku, Romanian Vee, and Arch.
I'm a middle aged guy with a lot of free time, looking for similar, to form a group for regular gaming. You should be chill, non-woke, and have time on your hands.

Orcs aren't black people.

There's no evidence playing D&D causes racism.

In the old school orcs were always pig people. Kobolds were little yappy dog people and gnolls were big growly dog people. Humans of all varieties beat them up and took their stuff.
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Finally, someone addressing the hiring policies and literary themes of modern WOTC that led to the Journey to the Radiant Citadel propaganda adventure.  Or at least that's what I assume based on the topic in the thread's subject of course because that's those are the only real types of racism I've encountered over the past couple decades in the ttrpg space...

Absolutely!

The very fact that they associate orcs with black people clearly shows who the real racists are.  The lack of self awareness is incredible.

There is a long tradition of inverting things to be clever. The imperials are actually the good guys in Star Wars for example. Nobody with any brains takes it  seriously. Then lefties enter the picture.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing. ~Robert E. Howard

Is this the "Extra Credits" video that they're responding to? From almost three years ago, posted in March 2021?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymUEPKTEQaQ

And the Wired article from Jan 2021?

https://www.wired.com/story/dandd-must-grapple-with-the-racism-in-fantasy/

I haven't finished the OP video yet, but I wanted to understand context.

Oh yay. More Extra Credits woke idiocy.

Oh yay, more Wired woke idiocy.

Two blasts from the past that need to stay buried.

I only brought them up because I think these are what the video from the OP is referring to. i.e. It's not me unburying them -- it's the Lotus Eaters.

They show a screenshot of the Wired article, so that one I'm sure about. They spend most of the early time talking about the "Extra Credits" video, but they don't give a link or screenshot when they talk about it, but that is the only candidate the seems to make sense.

I think you could make a case that the Jedi had grown complacent and self-absorbed and that contributed to their downfall. For example, they decided to assassinate the galactic president without due process just because he was a Sith. They gave themselves an ethical blank cheque to do whatever they pleased in service of the Greater Good™, which is a huge red flag. Even if they had succeeded, what did they expect would happen? That the Senate would just peacefully accept extrajudicial murder? No, this would destroy the Senate's faith in the Jedi and probably cause another galactic war. What would the Jedi do then? Just slaughter anyone who disagrees with them and built their own galactic empire for the sake of peace? Stand aside and let the galaxy fall into chaos?

I know Palpatine was playing both the Republic and the Confederation, but I think it's a stretch to claim the civil war would never have happened without his intervention. He was only able to manipulate the politicians by playing on their existing beliefs and desires. Even if he had never been born, the existing tensions would have boiled over anyway. It's easy to blame him for everything happening, but that reflects a very shallow understanding of how history and civilizations work. History and civilization are too complicated for human minds to really comprehend, so our history books simplify it into the terms of Great Men running history and so forth. In reality, history is a chaos mess of countless pinballs bouncing off one another. Yes, decisions made by leaders alter the course of history. But something as a simple a no-name messenger failing to deliver a letter can also alter the course of history (e.g. this exact example is a common point of divergence for alternate histories where the Confederacy wins the American Civil War). Maybe the Jedi Order would've lasted centuries more if Palpatine had never been born, but is that really a desirable outcome?

I know George claims the Jedi are perfectly good and the Sith are perfectly evil, but he's also human and can make mistakes. Case in point, he thinks democratic parliaments are perfect and incorruptible, which is just laughable. Given my love of Moorcock, I think it's more entertaining if the Jedi and Sith are both equally imbalanced and have become parodies of their original beliefs.

Unfortunately, it seems The Acolyte is setting up the Sith as a persecuted minority and either excusing or ignoring their various evil acts.
