This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Consistent personal identification has its upsides, or we wouldn't all have relatively stable names in our real lives.

Even worse would be somebody who does not have a stable identity in their real lives.

Legitimate examples of this, would be individuals in the Witness Protection Program.

It is even more than that. A thing I learned in my creative pursuit is that something, it doesn't matter how much ridiculous, complex or far-fetched acquires immediate legitimacy if you give it a name.

"We are planning to send ESPers under the polar ice to try to trace possible ruins from the Atlantis era still containing brain-wavelength emitting..."

"???"

"It is called Operation Kepler. It is the follow up of Operation Galileo".

"Boy, that's really cool!"

Real-life experience. I saved more than a "feature" in a story I was writing by applying a label to it.
For every idiot who denounces Ayn Rand as "intellectualism" there is an excellent DM who creates a "Bioshock" adventure.

Back when I was doing retail management after graduating from university, I used to hand out increasingly authoritative titles instead of pay raises (which I had no authority to offer) to the other employees.

Quote from: Reckall;496111I don't have that kind of problem during my games. I have some players, though, who agonize to show you "just this one video, we must see it because it is too (whatever)!"

Yes. I can't stand that.  Then they get pissed off at you when they don't get why you don't want to go on youtube and look up a 12 minute video of a dog farting or whatever idiotic thing they think is world-changingly important to inflict on the group.

So usually (with rare exceptions) I'm also quite clear about the fact that no, they can't use MY internet connection either.

The sad thing is that sometimes there is a video worth watching before a RPG session and that actually pimps you up, like the recent Hobbit and Prometheus trailers. But as soon as you do that you can be sure that the idiot of the day will pipe up with "And now this unmissable dog-farting video!!!" and things go to hell fast anyway.

Yes, not to mention that its a kind of captive audience.  If a player wants to tell everyone about a great video he saw somewhere, he can tell the group, and then, WHEN THEY GO HOME, each player can decide for themselves if they want to look it up.

Serious Paul

Eh, I'm a part of a group that uses a Google Mailing list for this. Most of the time it's just kind of boring to me. "Look at this cool link!"gets old after a while.

Beer or two during a game is tops, and I actually prohibit my players from drinking more during. I once tried to DM while high, and...well, devised a self - imposed rule after that:

No DMIU.

It was a really bad disaster.
