Quote from: ggroy;495227Most of the extreme stuff happened in some rpg games I played in, back in college.

In more recent times, there were a few incidents of drunken players getting into fist fights, and/or throwing cups/bottles around.

I think you need new gaming buddies.

Some of my players (and me) will drink some beers during the session. One or two of them may smoke some pot (which I never do). As no one gets ever any effect from that, being responsible adults and all, is a non-issue at my table.

Actually, when we played Aquelarre we made a point of only drinking wine and water because Coke was not adequate for the period :D We never had a problem.

Many years ago maybe someplayer woul drink a bit too much and become a bit distracted, or fall asleep or something. Never a big deal, and we could easily ignore it.

As usual, as long as you don't play with fucktards you are usually OK with almost anything.

Some people just shouldn't drink. It tends to bring out their inner retard. I don't allow such inbreds at my gaming table.
The same probably goes for smoking pot, though I haven't witnessed it myself.

I'll allow pretty much anything at my table, provided the players (and GM):
-pay attention and participate properly
-don't spoil other people's fun

Disruptive behaviour, be it drug-related or not, is not tolerated.

I have done, and have players who have done just about everything at gaming tables. It all depends on how the person is under the influence, and how much their current state differs from the rest of the group, and how comfortable people are with chemicals in the first place. Everyone being drunk and doing silly gaming can be fun, one guy drunk and making a scene is not. Similarly, being the only sober guy at a game sucks ass, but if everyone is sober, things are fine. In general stimulants are better than inebriants are better than psychedelics for gaming IME.

I chainsmoke, but I can only indulge this at one of my current groups (the Emern game) who allow me to smoke inside since the hosts do as well. Cigarettes are the perfect gaming drug / prop and these days I tend to stick to them. I once imitated a dragon's breath smoldering as he talked by taking a deep inhale and letting it drift up from the corners of my mouth while I spoke.

Actually, the one drug I do care about is Ritalin. People with ADHD need to take their Ritalin / Concerta / Whatever. I know a dude who on Ritalin is one of the best roleplayers I know, and off of it is this rambling unstoppable glassy stream of table talk.

I don't really drink but if someone wants a beer or a bit of wine I am fine with that. As others have said getting a little buzzed isn't much of an issue (some people relax more and find it makes them more social) but I don't want to deal with a person getting drunk at my house. Pot and cigarrettes are a deal breaker for me. Not opposed to people smoking either on their own time but I hate the smell of cigarettes and hate getting a contact high when others smoke pot around me (and I find the later makes it very hard for me to GM).

I should have clarified, smokers aren't a dealbreaker. Indoor smoking is the issue for me.

It seems like different posters are going back and forth between talking about (1) having a glass of wine with dinner before the game, and (2) being falling-down, vomiting-on-the-floor drunk.

Personally, in my groups of late, we tend to have some sort of drinks during the game - like a few beers or a glass of wine or two over the course of several hours of play.  While this has some effect on play, it doesn't make it any less serious in general.

I've been to some rare gatherings where a few people drank a lot, like at the camping trip + gaming that I've been to a few times.  It hasn't been a big deal even then - much like having a player or two who are very sleepy or otherwise out of it.  (It has always only been one or two players at the game.)

Completely understandable.

I mostly smoke outdoors, and I don't smoke in my own place. But if people are cool with smoking in their places, I will smoke away.

I smoke only on game day. I always feel like ass for the first few hours of the next day too.

Everyone I have gamed with understood that we were there to game not drink. Having said that, we do drink when we game. Wine is the accepted poison (beer considered uncouth at least when gaming). Post game drinking is far more serious (where beer loses it's pariah status) and it's more about drinking and socializing. Smoking is accepted too, although pot only makes a post game appearence.

That's also something I'm concerned about. Where I live now, most everyone takes public transportation so this is not an issue, and if someone did drive, the rule is they should be prepared to spend the night. I've never had a problem with someone trying to drive under the influence of anything.

Same here. I don't allow any smoking in the house. A long time ago, I used to smoke cigarettes in the house and when I had to move out, all the walls were yellow with nicotine stains. It took me almost 10 hours to steam-clean then off the walls. That was the end of that!
