This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Playing Classic Traveller

The LBB's are in the mail to me and I'm really intrigued based on the feedback from the various threads I've been starting and reading.

EDIT:  And Dr. Rotwang, your podcast among other things was ringing in my ears when I found the LBB stuff on ebay.

Would anyone have interest in a PbP game here on the site? I know they have a bad reputation of fizzling out, but we could give it a go.

we've started a traveller game too, of sorts.  playing in the spinward marches, using the awesome map that came with the MT boxed set.  but the ref has a major hard-on for the millennium's end rules, so we did chargen in MT then  converted the characters.  i think my UPP was 566D58.  6 terms navy; i blew the 4th & 5th term aging throws but the fuckers in the navy made me stay one more term (boxcars for re-enlistment).

bully for you balbinus!  i need to play *just* using CT sometime, even though i love MT.  but i couldn't use just books 1-3, i'd have to use 4 - 6 (never got merchant princes) and supplement 4.  love the expanded generation stuff.

now i have a nice gaming happy :D

I tried it just a year ago over on RPG.net, but it fizzled quickly.  I could easily referee an adventure starting today if anyone would care.

Aye, or if you'd rather play I'm up for it. got an adventure I wrote that's about 75% complete (and could use a kick-start for the final 25%) that might/not be publishable (on JTAS if nothing else). Or I can play as well. either way - I'm a Traveller whore.

This explains it without completely derailing this topic.

So, Ian - play or Ref? I'm easy.

I might be up for that PbP game, though I don't have a copy of the rules to hand, and start a new job next week.  (IE: I might not be able to post every day...)

Details?

Werekoala

If I end up running it, we'd go CT or GURPS 3rd, whichever (but CT would be faster/easier). Plan on having a ship, but for the first adventure at least it won't come into play at all, except as the source of your frustration/lack of cash. Aside from that, not much more to tell.

Nice!

I just downloaded a CT character generator, so could whip up a PC for that in no time flat.  I'd have to get my hands on a copy of the rules, so until that time someone might have to 'hold my hand' a bit.

GURPS, I've got nothing for, and actually might kill my enthusiasm, as I'm not really a fan of the system.

How about ref?  To avoid burnout, though, I'd like to shoot for a turn rotation of about every two days. Here's the setup I'd like to start with:

Character Backgrounds
Characters are from the Sword Worlds or closely-aligned independent worlds.
Character careers should be ship-oriented, but no one's being picky (see below).

The Situation
Following the Fifth Frontier War, the Sword Worlds are in bad shape.  The war went poorly for the Sword Worlds -- territory was lost on the Imperial front, and factional in-fighting has the Confederation on the verge of dissolution. The Darrians have seized upon this position of weakness to press centuries-old claims against territories on the Spinward border.  The Confederation's erstwhile ally in the war, the Zhodani Consulate, has been slow to deliver on previous promises of financial assistance, and the Imperium largely refuses any responsibility for supplying reconstruction funds to the war-ravaged worlds that they do not directly administer.  The local interstellar economy is in disarray, inflation is out of control, and it's nearly impossible to find a steady job.

Amidst all this social and economic upheaval, an opportunity rises on the horizon.  A small, adventurous merchant association, Chaperons Blanc, is attempting to re-invigorate local interstellar trade.  The means to this end lies in a mothball fleet of Sword World merchant ships, scattered around the outskirts of Confederation territory.  The central government can no longer support these ships in any fashion, but has agreed to a subsidy of sorts -- the ships can be privately operated and maintained for a 15% cut of all proceeds.

Chaperons Blanc has organised this arrangement and put out a call for qualified ship's crews to take possession of mothballed ships, refit them for service, and begin trade operations.  Those crews deemed "qualified" will be organised prior to application with Chaperons Blanc, and will consist of no less than a certified pilot, navigator, and engineer.  Specific competency is a matter that no one is paying particular attention to, and other positions may be filled aboard the ship if the organising crew deems them necessary. Working passage to the mothballed ship will be provided by Chaperons Blanc.

[Edit: I forgot, standard CT rules.  Oh, and sorry, WK -- I missed your last post while I was typing this up.]
