This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Playing by webcam

Soon, very soon, I will be trying to play HeroQuest with my old group in Perth via Skype video. The discussions have been had, the wheels are in motion. Forward to the 21st century!

Has anybody done this? And does anybody have any advice? Because I'm fucked if I know anything about webcams and connections and all the rest of it. I may need to buy a webcam, for example.

A group I started playing AD&D with locally uses Skype to patch in a really old friend of the DM's for their sessions via webcam.  It works very well, though there is the odd cut-out.  Connections are usually re-established pretty quickly, but can occasionally be a pain.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

Cool! I'm the GM, so if there's a dropout I guess I won't miss much.

Some people would hate it because they could not bitch about the hygene os other gamers, which seems to be all some gamers do anymore.

Other than that it makes a good substitute for being around a table when it's not feasible.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.

Using a webcam to play HeroQuest is just wrong man... you should be using it to show your wang to teenage girls in the hope of getting them to take their tops off.

Playing heroquest is just... dirty.

Well, they're three thousand kilometres away, so not feasible, I'm afraid. We're hoping this will be fun in its own way.

It's one of those unwritten laws of the internet.  Like the fact that broadband's adoption was fuelled by P2P and illegally downloading copyrighted material.

Most people have no business having webcams at home... you can chat over messenger or even using a mic, there's no need to see the other person.  Unless of course she's hot and you're hoping she'll take her top off.

The players decided they wanted to see whether I was happy or sad....
