This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

There's certain monsters in D&D that make natural "boss" villains. Depending on level, you have orc chiefs, evil human wizards or clerics, Liches or Vampires, Dragons, Demons, etc.

What about less usual ones? What unexpected D&D monster would you make your 'boss villain', and why?

No one ever selects Flumphs, so... Flumphs! :D (I can see it now: "Flumphs and Tyrrany of Fun!")
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Changelings. "They're everywhere..."
"When devils will the blackest sins put on, they do suggest at first with heavenly shows..."

Omega

A halfling, In a mechanical suit of armour. Who was running a cult. And who posed as the bosses prisoner. And got away...

A nightmare who was the one actually running things, not its rider.

A unicorn who as fed up with people cutting down his forest.

A wererat who just about took over an entire town.

A killer pillow. Because everything in Forgotten Realms is trying to kill you.

Dirk Remmecke

Someone or something like in the movie Don't Look Now.

(I once did, in fact, and one player almost freaked out because he felt reminded of that movie - but he thought that was a coincidence and his interpretation, so he tried to stay calm. If he had known that I was pulling that string deliberately he would have left the table...)
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

Batman

Archons - because humanity has been given enough chances. (examples: the old testament, Dogma, CW's Supernatural)

Fleshgolem - Master is killed and it's seeking revenge (example: Frankenstein's monster)

Sprite - Someone has (poisoned the well / stolen the batch of Pixie-dust or kidnapped the queen of faeries) and they're seeking the perpetrator who's hiding in a small village causing all sorts of mischief and destruction.

Mimic artificer - created an army of gadgets and artifact minions for domination of a small town or area, using an old smelting factory as it's base of operations.

You know, I've always wondered how one would go about setting up celestials as antagonists, and why this approach hadn't occurred to me is beyond me.

Like... it seems ridiculously obvious in hindsight.
Mechanics should reflect flavor. Always.
Playing: Cidallia "Cid" Rudolfeau, Human Gadgeteer Detective in Ironfang Invasion (D&D 5e).
Running: Chrono Break: Dragon Heist + Curse of the Crimson Throne (D&D 5e).
Planning: Rappan Athuk (D&D 5e).

Christopher Brady

An 'enlightened' Otyugh (his back history involved a very bored Mindflayer), he ran Waterdeep's garbage collector's guild.  Like a mafia.
"And now, my friends, a Dragon\'s toast!  To life\'s little blessings:  wars, plagues and all forms of evil.  Their presence keeps us alert --- and their absence makes us grateful." -T.A. Barron[/SIZE]

Cave Bear

A roper. Ropers are chaotic evil creatures with exceptional intelligence, 10-12 hit dice, magic resistance, and six tentacle attacks per round that grab and cause weakness. These guys get overlooked and treated like joke monsters, but they are really hardcore.

Yeah, the "exceptional intelligence" is always the weird part about the Roper. Because by all appearances it should be an animal. Except we're told they're actually like philosophers or something.
