This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Romance/relationships in RPG campaigns

Y'know... mostly I play games to kill shit or do all sorts of epic shit that would be pretty hard to do in real life on a Saturday afternoon.... legally anyway.  I have relationships in real life. I appreciate them but I wouldn't call them 'fun'.

Now, I've long ago moved past the lone orphan assassin sort of character.  I'm the jackass that brings a three page backstory to the table detailing family and social connections and motivations... or lets the GM place me on the map, either way is good with me actually. I've also played characters who pushed for in game relationships (including one epically broken D&D game (pre-3E) where that's ALL I did because the other players were so over the top munchkinners that it was all that was left for 'Fuck the half-elf barbarian'... and another game where my seriously whacko commando tried to clean  up his act and put the moves on the smokin' liaison for our mercenary team... just before the game died.

But you know what?  Rules for relationships developed at the table appear to kill that sort of shit dead for some reason.  I brought "The Book of Erotic Fantasy" to my table as a GM and smirked as it killed the highly disruptive inter-party sexing that was going on.  I note that 'Dependents' and other pointed relationships that exist on character sheets are used almost exclusively in mechanical ways 'Your sister Spacey has been kidnapped, thus starting tonight's adventure. Go. Rescue her!'

Ultimately it requires a player that is interested in pursuing an actual relationship and a GM that is flexible enough to let it happen.... my last GM was that guy, but in the current game (where the GM is a player...) the new GM, while a swell guy with a great grasp of mechanics, is ultimately a robot running us through adventure modules...
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Spike, but doesn't romance among pikas generally involve cannibalism and consequent rapid weight gain for the females? If so, I don't wonder you generally shy away from it...

Koltar

This all depends on the campaign's group of players.

It can work tho.

I had one regular player at Uni who

*Always played a pimp except in a WoD Innocents game where I rejected his rent boy concept and he ended up playing a pervy Colin Creavy type.

*Would try and hit on every PC or NPC female that he spoke to

*Often got himself into lots of shit doing so

He was a blast. Okay maybe he wasn't the greatest roleplayer but he brought the awesome as he would put it.

The only other times relationships came up in my games was a Romanitic in a Paranoia game who was off her hormone supressants and a very violent little girl in Innocents who developed a cute little crush on her classmate.

Oh and in the Bloodsucker game I ran I had a player take the Fashion Dictated Sexuality flaw to whole new levels. As written you roll each game to see what your sexuality is for the duration of the session. He interpreted it as roll each time sexuality comes up and proceeded to use seduction as a weapon throughout the game.

This was so hillarious when I wrote Bloodsucker: The Angst Xpress Edition I added this alternative as an option named after him. Dannov's Rule.

Wow. That was quite the necro, Koltar.

In other news, my Legion campaign still looks like a teenage soap opera; only one where the characters have mostly left school and some are aging more gracefully than others.

Truth be told - I was browsing the forum via the 'Quick Links' section that shows who is onlinbe. A guest/non-registered person was browsing this thread's title intrigued. Then I surprised I hadn't posted in the early days of the thread.

That GURPS:Traveller campaign I had going for 4 years plus had lots or romance and relationship stuff going on in it.

Imagine if the TV show "Firefly" had gone on for two more seasons - except the showrunner wasn't determined to kill off main characters...but the awkward romance and soap opera in space stuff still happened.

Yeah - that was my TRAVELLER campaign at times. They still had running gun battles with Pirates and Starport authorities (it all depends which planet they were on) but the romances went on just like it was an epic T^V series or ongoing comic book. Heck, there was even a wedding (with a chase and firefight included) of a player charactrer to an NPC.

As for the Legion of Super Heroes? I still have to play catch up with the recent Paul Levitz stories. I've been buying them and now they've piled up - like to read three or four in a row to make it more fun.

In my current Legion campaigns, each of the player characters are involved in relationships:

Colossal Boy (Alejo): married to Yera (a durlan).  Unable to have children, they want to adopt a Jewish child (Colossal Boy is Jewish and Yera converted; she's more religious than he is), but are going to run into some problems there.

Sun Boy (Federico): had a long-running relationship with Tornado Lass (Barry Allen's daughter who lives in the 30th century), until she was killed during the Dominators' occupation of Earthgov. Lately suffering traumatic stress disorder, Sun Boy hooked up with Catspaw, a half-feral mutant girl who's the same age as his daughter, then promptly abandoned her when he left the Legion after killing a supervillain.

Tyroc (Jong): Happily married to Gigi Cusimano, Science Police Chief on Mars.  Tyroc has the least relationship issues of anyone in the game, both he and his wife are extremely busy people who spend relatively little time together but they both kind of like it that way, very low-pressure. Having recently managed to save only about two hundred of his people from genocide at the hand of the Dominators, Tyroc now finds himself having to introduce her to them as his queen, when they're deeply scarred and traditionally distrustful of all non-marzali, but especially caucasians.

Invisible Kid II (Eduardo):  Has developed into a relationship with his fellow freedom-fighter Infectious Lass. The relationship has only recently begun to become serious.

Magnetic Kid (Daniel): Had dated his old Academy school-mate Lamprey for quite some time, until the death of their friend Comet Queen eventually led to their distancing and breakup. Much later, he got together with Neon (Celeste Rockfish/McCauley) and has had a slightly turbulent relationship with her since then, knowing that she's keeping many secrets from him, but worried to explore further for fear of losing her.

Ultra Boy (Marcel): Spent years and years as boyfriend to Phantom Girl, until she died in an accident shortly after he proposed marriage to her.  Devastated, he shut down emotionally for years, going from one cheap relationship to another.  Recently, he has found himself attracted to the reformed ex-villain Spider Girl.

And that's just the Player Characters!
