This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Oddly, his excitement always sounds artificial, but ends up having all the normal effects you might expect from being genuine later on.

And, no, I don't have an explanation for that.

You mean the bit where he says:

QuoteOoh boy ... I think we're getting closer to the meat of the discussion, and I am excited! I hope you're having fun too.

?

Because if so, yeah. You know what that reminds me of? Vincent Baker's prose in Dogs In the Vineyard, where he tries to get you excited about his rules by acting like he's your overexcited gamer buddy frothing about the latest hot game.

Doesn't score points with me.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Warthur

You know what? The two Jameses are having a more exciting and heated debate here in the commentary than the Pundit and Tony are in the actual thread.

Yeah. But Vincent Baker sounds sometimes almost like he run autoerotics during writing. (I don't mean that as insult, its just my feeling.)

I hope TonyLB will not reach that point. :p

Not to piss on everyone's parade, but this sort of seems like a threadcrap by proxy. :(

I can confirm that in real life, Tony is a very enthusiastic, excited, engaging (and other positive things starting with 'e') guy, so I doubt his excitement is false! :)

Tony's always like that. It's just his way. I used to think it was all put-on, but I slowly realized he peobably wasn't, and began to take him at face value, which is usually my default manner, anyway.

BTW, are you going to be at GenCon, Malcolm?

QuoteYeah, see, I'm not defending Pundit's methods. I don't think that's what's in dispute, is it? I mean, sometimes to let off steam it's fun to shout. I get it. I get Pundit's "marketing ploy" as well - to be the anti-Forge. Sure, fine, whatever.

None of that changes the need, as I saw it, that someone needed to call the theory into question and shed some light on it. The fact that Pundit seemed to be the most vocal (vociferous, and viscious) was simply a matter of timing and such. There are times when being nice about the disagreement isn't going to make a difference.

Oh bullshit.  Pundit doesnt' deserve credit for jackshit.  Outside this little hole in the wall, and a few onlookers on his damn blog, the rest of the Internet basically points and laughs at the little toad.  He has about as much credibility as a court jester.

There were plenty of other active and vocal anti-theory individuals, on RPGnet in particular, so much so as to make the ensuing conflict post-Forge theory closing nearly tear the damn place apart.

If you want to go point at one guy and give him all the credit, at least point at someone like JimBob, who people actually fucking listened to.

I've limited exposure, so I'm admittedly not up to speed on who did what to whom when.  I'm just giving my perspective based on my coming to the Internet to start nosing around a couple of years ago (I think).

Now if you say JimBob or someone else was the voice of reason in the debates, I'll take your word.  JimBob and I have our differences, but I could certainly see him attempting to rebut the direction without resorting to the kind of language used by Pundy - and to provide something positive/contructive to boot!

I see all kinds of people to have discussions with here now - it's why I like it.  So I give Pundit credit for holding true to his attempt to provide a place free of the assumption that The Big Model was gospel and could be debated, even heatedly, without resort to biased moderation.

But this has nothing to do with the pistols argument, I think.  I mean, I didn't think we were discussing Pundit's methods, but whether or not there was a "war" or "battle" or "conflict" in gaming. I wouldn't defend Pundits method all the time, everywhere. I'd barely support them in the worst situations. but from the little I saw at the time I camre around, he was the most vociferous defense of the traditional gaming I saw.

He needs to change that, though. It's the wrong tone for a written debate. :raise:
