This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What did Sett and Pundit debate about?
"The difference between being fascinated with RPGs and being fascinated with the RPG industry is akin to the difference between being fascinated with sex and being fascinated with masturbation. Not that there\'s anything wrong with jerking off, but don\'t fool yourself into thinking you\'re getting laid." —Aos

It's not that horrifying. Sett had a lot of good points, and behavior/experential data to back them up.  Pundy... less so; about all he could do in his retorts was, "What??? Are you sucking Ron Edwards' Cock?!?!" :melodramatic: :keke:

Ouch!
Tony´s recent post is really, really not doing him favors. All the way condescending. And he is trying so hard to be one of us.
His little story of his camp nerdly experience...wow, just wow.

He doesn´t realize how offensive and pathetic it is at the same time. And how totally uncool and un-authentic it sounds. And how self-conscious. The only thing he seems to be oblivious to, is how he is actually perceived from the outside.

Is there some training going on? Forgers delibnerately loosing all taste and aesthetic sensors? To free their mind? "Now we must de-fonziefy ourselves! Let us bring forth the book of shameful self-relevation!"

People having their own brand of fun is offensive to you?

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Settembrini

QuotePeople having their own brand of fun is offensive to you?
Yes, because he uses is as a rhetoric weapon. He needs to spell out his Nerd-Creds, in detail.
Think about it.
Think about how self-conscious he is about that.

It´s the same tastelessness as if somebody talks about his sex life.

Really, you can diss me for a lot of aggressive stuff I say, which might be over the top. But this time it´s aesthetics, and Tony totally came off as trying hard to chum up to the regular folks. A bit like when John Kerry tried to sound down to earth and one with the people. Just lame.

I urge you to read it again, Levi:

QuoteIn early May, about 100 story-gamers gathered together at a local campground for a weekend of outdoors fun and lots of gaming. It's basically a small convention ... but since there are already plenty of conventions in hotels, people organized something a bit different (and fun!)

I rolled in with my foam boffer weaponry (gotta love some foam ass-kickin'!) and my backpack full of games, and got myself registered. I was in Stirge Cabin, but somehow got assigned to garbage detail. Man ... shouldn't that be the job of the folks in Otyugh cabin? I should have ... uh ... bloodsucking detail. Or carrying-tiny-demi-humans detail. But I got my Owlbear camp T-Shirt, and my Owlbear poker chips (I'll post pictures, if you like!) so I suppose garbage detail was okay. For peope who (according to you) universally hate and revile D&D we sure did seem enamored of our beloved monster-manual denizens.

When Agon was announced, I did in fact lead a rousing chorus of "This is SPARTA!" Because ... damn ... it's a Greek game. You gotta have some Sparta shouts to get that started. There was also a great deal of talk of Lost (wanna hear my mapping of Lost characters to roles on Gilligan's Island?), X-Men, chili recipes, LotR, Czechoslovakia, Harry Potter, etc., etc. Man, when you get gamers together and get them started they can talk.

Spent the weekend playing games ... and y'wanna know something?  Not once did I hear anyone talking about how our games were cooler than anything else.  But damn, we did talk about how very cool they were. Again ... for people who (according to you) can only assuage our rampant egotism by putting others down there was a remarkable focus on valuing our games for what they were, rather than comparing them to anything else.

Between and betwixt games, I kicked some serious ass at boffer fighting (my victims were determined, but the combination of years of boffer practice in college plus black-belt reflexes will, in fact, overcome a beginner's bone-deep certainty that Aragorn lives again in their heart) but picked up a dislocated thumb in the process. I'd do it again ... bruises fade, chicks dig scars, but glory lasts forever.

Then, of course, we had dinner and a camp talent show, including filks (eh) and several very, very raunchy songs (woohoo!)  It's really quite astounding how many people there turned out to have really good singing voices. Who knew? It was wonderful to hear such talent being dedicated to songs like "The hedgehog has never been buggered."

And then goodbyes, hearty handshakes, dutifully clearing away the garbage (I'm tellin' you ... this should be an Otyugh job!) and back to my life. Fun weekend!

Sonmeone really naive can pull off this style, like Kevin Siembieda. And I´ll watch him with star-struck eyes. But Tony? No, that´s totally artificial and self-conscious. Yuck.

I've got to say that Camp Nerdly sounds pretty....nerdly.

So Swine means looking down on gamers and there are all these Swine and  collaborators out there and then the Pundit goes and shits all over Tony's experience and Sett questions Tony's gamer credentials (not to mention camp nerdly...hell of a way to talk about gamers Sett)...hell, I'll say it again, these two are Swine...well Swine King and concubine respectively.

I did not say what you imply.
I don´t have a problem with the fun at camp nerdly, as I don´t have any problem with people having sex.

But I have a huge problem with people talking about their sexlife or theri nerd life in a certain way. That is self-conscious, chumming up and with just a touch too much enthusiasm for their own awesomeness and down to earthness.

Let me highlight:

QuoteBetween and betwixt games, I kicked some serious ass at boffer fighting (my victims were determined, but the combination of years of boffer practice in college plus black-belt reflexes will, in fact, overcome a beginner's bone-deep certainty that Aragorn lives again in their heart) but picked up a dislocated thumb in the process. Boffer Larp is a rad thing to do, I´m sure. But the way he talks about it?

Wankery. Wankery as a proof of his geek-creds. Inherintly, he´s condescending to all boffer-types, because he makes sure, that apart from being a high falutin´game-designeurTM, he is also doing silly stuff like the rest of us. Yuck.
Am I the only one getting that vibe? If so, then just let me ramble.

So now you're objecting to the way how he describes his experiences ?

Quote from: SettembriniAm I the only one getting that vibe? If so, then just let me ramble.

No, there are folks here who think that Tony is not sincere...it's just that I'm not one of them.

I think he is. I've heard him talk about his  camp experiences before - I think. That kind of stuff does not interest me at all...but apparently some gamers dig meeting up and gaming .
