Quote from: Silverlion;358544I'll add Providence.

It was an RPG created by a Canadian Company called XID Creative. It's basic idea was a complete fantasy world in which superheroes exist.

I was drawn to the idea because of the basic artwork of the game. Not all of it gorgeous, but it was unique for the time.

The PC's come from a race of winged humanoids, and depending on their status (winged flyer, winged glider, no wings, etc.) They are put in a caste system that is highly limiting.

Ages ago the races of Providence lived on a world called Yas'Wail, but they lost a war between the castes, and their very gods fell (being simply extremely powerful magic users.) Betrayed by their beliefs, and losing a the war they were exiled through gates to the world of Providence. Where they'd been sending war-prisoners, dangerous criminals, and even a powerful god-like entity that had once threatened Yas'Wail.

The world of Providence is the interior of a planet a metal poor world with a magical sun lights its interior.  Vast jungles, seas, and other wonders exist, and for centuries the prisoners were not only exiled but held in actual prisons. Until rebellions again came and the Yas'wailians became free again. This freedom lead to more struggles and the castes were retained.

Now the godlike entity, in the form of Elothorin Avatars returned and began smashing its way through the "invaders" to its realm.  As well as the descendants who have changed in this new world--become reptile people or insect people, or even bonded with plants threaten to bring war to the centuries newer arrivals.

The world--magically supported begins crumbling away, seas began consuming the land, earthquakes tear through long quiet faults, and other dangers have brought the winged peoples to suffer greatly. But in this hour of great need, magically empowered superheroes begin appearing.  These "shards" may be something new. Now its up to them, and their allies both skilled normals and spell-user must be heroes, true heroes. In this strange fantasy world.

It's well crafted setting, though suffered because the "world may be ending" metaplot and the unknown reasons for it were never revealed. It has some wonders, some fun, and the races are interesting and unique (named after earth birds, and other things: Eagles, Hawks, Swans, Dragons, Gargoyles, Bats, Rats, and others..)

The system was flawed, complicated, and a bit problematic, but not unplayable. It used and odd die pool mechanic.

I think what sold me the most on trying it was the editorial comment in it at the beginning which talked about why the game had superheroes, and why it was a decided choice to focus on it, because many games that were out during its development focused on playing more "monsters" than heroes (Vampire for example.)

I'll be stealing a good deal of this.

I was really all about Renegade Legion.  It was a cool system that had all kinds of boxed sets masquerading as wargames.

It was published by FASA Corp in the 1990's, and Legionnaire was the actual book for the roleplaying part of the system, was co-designed by Michael A. Stackpole, author of the famous Pulling Report.

It was awesome, man.  It was modular, similar to old Mechwarrior, Battletech, Aerotech and Citytech.

Except it was called Centurion, Interceptor, Leviathan and Legionnaire. It was more Space Opera than other FASA products at the time, set in an era where most of humanity is racist and bigoted enemy of everyone else.  Except they are Romans, instead of Nazis.  Kinda weird space Romans with ray guns type thing.

Oh and the spider aliens (there were a bunch) are good guy pc's.

Renegade Legion.

I think I'm gonna stalk these down again.  I'm still not sure what became of all my Renegade Legion...

By the Gods - A game by Ragnarok Publishing published in 1993. Characters are demigods and heroes from one of the major pantheons (British, Roman, and Scandinavian are provided as pantheons). The system is somewhat crunchy, with hundreds of skills, psychic skills, and powers to choose from. Despite this, it's fairly incomplete. The weapons list includes baseball bats and "shiruken" but has only 20 entries, and the section on armor says basically "design your own". Three short scenarios, one for each pantheon. Useful primarily as a mythological reference and as an example of nice font work... Ragnarok Publishing transmogrified some time ago in the Scriptorium.

Mean Streets was awesome. At least, the edition I reviewed was. Besides the clear Noir element, it could also be used to run an absolutely kickass New York Mobsters campaign.

Monsters and Other Childish Things

This is a neat game that I can't wait to play.  The PCs in this game are kids, either elementary, junior high, or high school.  You're a normal kid with friends, enemies, parents, and so on.  But you also have a monster.  He's your best friend and looks after you, but sometimes he gets mad and goes out of control.  Some other kids have monsters too, and they don't always get along.

You know how your Mom says sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?  Well, this one kid Derek called me a buttface nutsack and it really hurt my feelings and made me look stupid in front of everyone.  My monster, Fire-breathing Joe, got REALLY mad.  He chased down Derek's Giant Razor-Legged Spider and bit off two of his legs.  Hopefully Derek won't be looking for payback.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!
Which is ridiculous \'cause witches they were persecuted Wicca good and love the earth and women power and I'll be over here.

You might pick up the world book. It has almost no game stats, and gives a LOT of world information.

Stalking the Night Fantastic: Bureau 13 by Tri-Tac games.

Totally gonzo. You play agents of Bureau 13, a secret division of the government created during the Civil War to police supernatural threats and other weirdness (everything from aliens, to dimensional travelers, to sorcery, to superscience, to Godzilla, you name it). Very MIB/Supernatural/X-files/Hellboy with an almost Rifts-ish overthetop genre mixing potential. Great sense of humor. The system was very clunky, but I believe they released a D20 version a couple years ago that I've not had a chance to really check out. Part of the reason I looked forward to Beyond the Supernatural, all those years ago, was to run a B13 like game. Highly recommend the novels by Nick Pollotta as well. Super-Gonzo Monster-killing fun that reads almost like an rpg adventure log.

The novels were awesome. The game? Not so much. I'd always hoped they'd find something other than the Tri Tac System to wed it too--something light and able to carry serious and humorous well.

Sadly my dreams of B13 Savage Worlds, or something equally simple* seems just that--dreams. I really want the game to be as good as the novels, and it hasn't managed it yet. I love the concept, but I'll be honest Rich Tucholka hasn't yet pulled off near as much quality in B13 as the Nick managed. It was a shame when I heard of their falling out and the fact there woudl be no more novels. I think Rich is capable of finding someone able to take his ideas and run with them--but I'm not sure he alone can do it.

*My actual ideal would probably be a Tunnels & Trolls/MSPE hybrid. Porting the magic over to MSPE and adding some Psychic powers. Although I think the level system would need be dropped since ANY B13 agent is going to be somewhat bad-ass.

Well, they do have a d20 Modern Bureau 13, but I am guessing that's not what you are looking for.

Unfortunately not. D20 Modern is a fine game, but not really fast paced enough for the feel of Novel B13

I remember the advertisements for it in The Dragon magazine.  Ysgarth is still out there, with a revised 7th edition scheduled for release in 1998! :)

I agree. I've never been that impressed with Tucholka's work alone. It was always the novels that seemed to breathe life into the setting. Hopefully he can find someone to pick up the reins that will have the same sense of humor.
D20 Modern has it's place, but I don't think D20 works all that well in a modern setting. It just doesn't seem to translate to firearms well for me. Of course Tri-Tac's system is certainly no better. In closing, I have three words for you. Go Team Tunafish.
