This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So What's Everyone Playing These Days?

Running Stars Without number fortnightly midweek.
We did a character gen session last night and system overview for SWN revised edition, which was fun and went well.
We had a couple of old movies playing in the background as well (Zardoz and Dr Phibes).

I run DnD 5e on weekends twice a month.

I play in a Dnd 7th ed (the latest version) Call of Cthulhu campaign irregularly (whenever the GM has time), usually on a Friday or Saturday evening about once a month.

I would like to get a semi regular campaign going for "Silent Legions" run in a "Hammer house of horror" style sometime.

Spinachcat

You can't run sci-fi "fortnightly midweek"!!

I would so love to advertise a Warhammer game as fortnightly midweek, but nobody in LA would know when to meet.

Other than FLGS game days, I am in early playtests for my new-ish RPG, and early playtests for my 2 boardgames. The RPG went back to the drawing board after the Spring testing and relaunching this Fall. It was originally OSR which is my wheelhouse, but it didn't feel right. So I stepped back and dodged done a design rabbit hole which produced some interesting bits for the relaunch. We will see.

My two boardgames are getting prepped for public playtests in our local game designer crucible of tears and pain. I have high hopes for one of them, because the early playtests have rocked on that one.

Why not? I run it in the middle of the week (Wednesday or Thursday) on a fortnightly basis...
*Confused*
Midweek just means in the middle of the week (like a Wednesday or Thursday or something like that), not weekly. Well I suppose if you don't qualify it with "Fortnightly", it would mean that.
Anyway, moving right along..   Fortnightly on a Wednesday or Thursday../... better?  ;)

GameDaddy

okay, so three months on.... ...was running 0D&D, dropped it. The college kids found it too lethal (LoL)

Still playing in a 5e Campaign 2x month.

Working on Gamma World setting... still...

Also putting together a MIndjammer campaign setting binder.

So, am not GMing anything. Nick wants to run a Trail of Cthulu campaign and has been putting together an adventure for that.

Pix of our D&D 5e Sunday gathering last few weeks...

I'm thinking maybe Spinachcat was joking about the somewhat archaic sound of the phrasing in relation to playing sci-fi.

Going off you previous post, a friend of mine that deals in media sent me a spare BluRay of Zardoz recently. I don't care what people say. That movie is awesome.

I'm old and Archaic, so it's no surprise..  heh.
Which bit is seen as Archaic?  Fortnightly or midweek?   or both?

Yeah Zardoz is an interesting movie. I feel it's a commentary on the 60s hippy culture.
Either way, it's funny to see the "Groovy" costumes..  heh.
It's got some nice ideas for RPGs too.

Dr Phibes is fun Horror satire.  It doesn't take itself seriously at all.

I'm guessing the fortnightly part. Nothing wrong with being archaic though.

There is definitely some of that.

Yes. I don't take it that seriously. It's definitely a good choice for a background movie for an RPG session.

To my shame, I've somehow never seen that.

I'm running a monthly Tekumel game, using D&D 5e.

I think it has some relevance to nowadays as well. What with Gender identity, sexuality etc being a big topic of discussion in general. Especially in social media.  Although I'm pretty tired of the subject these days.

Yeah, we stopped occasionally to comment/discuss aspects of the movie and have a laugh at it too.

Oh, and I played a movie called "Lifeforce" as well. A British 80s movie about "Space vampires".
I got some ideas from it for my SWN campaign and I wanted the players to see the alien space ship, as I used a ship like it in the campaign.

Dr Phibes is a lot of fun. I believe there's 3 Dr Phibes movies in total. All worth watching.

As to the SWN revised rules.   I really like it and the players in the up and coming campaign are looking forward to trying it out.
They've been playing in my 1st Ed SWN campaign for a couple of years now.
So a couple more sessions of the 1st Ed campaign. Then wrap it up and write the characters as NPCs into the campaign world and start a new campaign with the old characters as a faction in the new campaign.
The players will get to make decisions about their old characters actions once per game month.

I can understand that.

That's another great background movie. It's pacing is too uneven for me to consider it truly good, but I still like it, and it has a lot of great visuals (When I say great visuals, I am talking about the special effect. Get your mind out of the gutter!).

I really like the psychic rules and space combat. I haven't had time to read it all yet though.

That's the perfect way to wrap up the campaign. However, if action movies have taught me anything it is that announcing you are two sessions away from retirement is just asking for a TPK. I hope none of the players recently bought a space yacht.

Voros

Zardoz and Lifeforce are both great bad movies.

Heh yeah, there were some appreciative comments about some of the errm.... "Visuals"...  :D
And for the age of the movie, decent special effects too..

Yeah, it's not a great movie, but some nice ideas to use for an RPG and fun to watch whilst doing something else, such as character gen.

The more I read of the new edition, the more I like it.

I was a bit wary of the compression of skills and how they're so generalised and linked to background for definition.  But it's growing on me.

Heh yeah, last session, they "Acquired" a semi-derelict "Space Vampire" cruiser, much like the
one in "Lifeforce" although much smaller (the one in the movie is a few kilometres long).

But they're currently in a sort of derelict space ship graveyard and there's an active jumpgate manned by crazy Psychics who have given them a few days to grab a ship and leave the area (for reasons that are too convoluted to describe here).

The ship is still sort of haunted though and not fully explored, although they have enough fuel for one jump.
Then they'll probably have to make some sort of deal with another faction (which is sort of set up ), as cruisers are horribly expensive to run and repair, not to mention needs a large crew number.
It's interesting though, as it's the only cruiser in the known sector. Everything else is a Frigate or smaller.
Well there's some carriers (Bannerjee corporation), which are technically cruiser class, but not made for battle.

Well put.

I see the approach to skills in 2E as an alternate method rather than a full replacement. Use the one that best suits your campaign. If you want a grittier feel, then you are better off with the 1E approach. If you want a campaign where farmboys can hop into a state-of-the-art fighters and fly them with no problem, you are better off with the 2E approach. I can easily foresee times I would want to go with either approach.

I wish your players luck with their haunted cruiser.
