Same here.
But after reading the letter on the other site, I was wondering if it wouldn't be easier to simply buy a badge and not bother with signing up for any events? Just about any message board community I read has any number of people planning to run pick-up games during GenCon. Even if online gamers are only a fraction of gamers as a whole, I have to imagine that a fairly large number of pick-up games are available at any given time. I'd imagine further that such games would be just as enjoyable and expose one to as many different gamers as official events. Sure, I realize that some events are special - perhaps the designer of the game is involved, or some other gaming notable is running it - but I think meeting new people and seeing new product (or old, rare product) would be more of a draw, or at least as much of a draw, as gaming events. But, I guess others don't see it like that.
My Don't-Care-O-Meter's needle was buried through almost that whole rant.

this isn't so much a news story as a link to an interesting blog post.
belongs in the game industry forums more than as a news story. edited, moved, story deleted.

Thanks, Knightsky :) I have a similar one at home, but wasn't at home when I posted that.

I guess I got off easy last year. I thought that it was tons better than it had been the previous year, which was in turn
miles better than the year previous to that!
Now, admittedly, I don't really buy tickets for events, but everything I'd heard anecdotally was to the positive regarding Gen Con's "Ironing out" of it's wrinkles.
Billy, you and I both know that there are people at that convention that love to bitch so much that if Adkinson had a limo service just for them from the hotel and to the con center and allowed them to use one of the golfcarts to get around the con space and put them at the front of every line they'd still bitch.

Yeah, too true man. I've just read this particular guy's blog a few times in the past and he didn't strike me as one of the "Eternal Bitches"
like TB, i've found the service to improve dramatically the last couple of years. the first year in indy, registering was ridiculous - i think i was in line for at least an hour, and i got there well after the really bad part!
Are there really 25-30k people coming every year? Damn.
Someday I'll go. When I do, I have no intention of signing up for events. I'll buy my badge, arrange pick-up games with people on these and other forums, and hang out. Not sure if that's the best way to do it, but it's what sounds like fun to me.

I'm surprised it's not more.
From everything I've heard or read, I also think what you plan on doing is the better way to go.

That's the way to do it. I talk to my friends, find out what game they're running, and if its something official, I have my generic tickets and show up.
