Title: Pay for the ads!
Post by: Settembrini on October 26, 2007, 06:25:03 PM
Let the free market reign!

Now we are allowed to pay cash to receive advertising!

http://www.amazon.de/Wizards-Presents-Classes-Races-Dungeons/dp/0786948019/ref=sr_1_1/028-0291475-6006129?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1193435967&sr=8-1

The. Fuck?

BTW, is there any sane person who likes that cover art?
Would even a ten year old like that stupid shit?

I mean, if you go the high powered/ridicolous route, you might try at least to be, like, cool?

The contents of the book:

Artwork
Design articles for the races and the classes of the new D&D.
Without rules.

* It's all new text, essays from the design/development staff about the making of 4E (including a design timeline) and the new status quo for races and classes. It's not a history of D&D as a whole, but an in-depth look at the making of this edition. This and the companion book, Wizards Presents: Races and Classes, give a complete picture of how we concepted, designed, and wrote 4th Edition.

* This new art and text? WILL NOT be repeated in the Player's Handbook as a whole. It's possible that, say, an unfinished sketch in the preview book might be finished and turned into a color piece later--but I've seen the PH art order, and that's all new too. Similarly, the races and class writeups ARE NOT what appear in the PH. How could they be? These essays were written months ago, and a few things have changed since then. But you'll be surprised by how much we're saying here...

...and by the new things exclusive to this book that no one's talked about yet. Occasionally, we DO manage to keep some secrets. (http://www.enworld.org/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Awesome. And at 96 pages twenty bucks is a steal.

Cover looks like ass, but hey.

I was going to let this slide, but now I feel compelled to point out that in another thread you wrote "transpiration," when in actual fact it should be

PERspiration.

$20 for a "making of 4E" book?    some people will buy anything.

i saw at borders today some equally useless book on dungeons.  basically some recycled art, and a one or two page description of some of the dungeons of d&d history.  general "dungeon tactics" stuff too.  another waste of money.

oh yeah, here it is:  "dungeon survival guide"
(amazon listing)
http://tinyurl.com/2teygb

gotta keep funneling fanboy cash into the trough until june i guess.  again,

Wow.   Way to crap all over the legacy of my beloved 1st Edition Dungeoneer's Survival Guide Hasbro.  That was what supplements should be.

I flipped through the Dungeon Survival Guide yesterday at the local game store.  It looked like the worst official D&D product I had seen since the 2e days.

how many more shitbooks do you think they'll release between now & june?  they can probably dupe some gamers into buying one or two more of those, methinks.

Sett; did you mean "let the free market rule"?
In that case it really should be reign, and you were right the first time.

If you meant... I dunno.. "let the free market shower", then I guess "rain" would be correct.

From what I could tell (not speaking German) someone could easily assume it was a rule-book, eg with rules for extra races and classes.

I don't understand the appeal of art-books (or of paying for role-playing material for that matter :D ), but whatever, however someone could easily buy it thinking it was other than what it was.

That's too bad. I actually liked the concept. I didn't really give a shit about game stats in it - I actually thought it'd be cool without them. What I thought - or rather, hoped - it would be was a book that gave a narrative account of the various classic dungeons of D&D, presented in such a way that someone who wasn't a gamer could pick it up, read it, and say "cool." Sort of like those old Terran Trade Authority books, except for a fantasy world. I'd want it to be a bit more substantial than what's been described in this thread, though. I think D&D has a rich history to mine for such products, stuff that doesn't have to have a ream of goddamned rules that will be nonsensical to someone who doesn't play. I'd want it to be the kind of book anyone could put on their bookshelf and years later someone leafs through it and gets their mind blown.

Brilliant, WOTC has the fans/suckers pay the cost of 4e "previews".

Only with D&D baby.

WOTC, I salute you.

Pundt, it was a theRPGsite in-Joke, making fun of "to rain on someone´s parade" where only "to rein in a parade" makes any sense.

@Pierce: Thanks! That´s one of those intircate traps. Perspiration, of course!
