Patrick Stuart´s Demon-Bone Sarcophagus

I dare to say that I am a fan of Patrick Stuart´s work. For example, Deep Carbon Observatory, Silent Titans, and Veins of the Earth are right up my alley.

Demon-Bone Sarcophagus is the first part of the Broken Fire Regime Trilogy. As far as I know, it is the direct continuation of Deep Carbon Observatory. My attention is very much attracted to this adventure, but I have found only one review: a Questing Beast video. In that review, it is mentioned that there are several spelling and grammar mistakes, and at least 1 page needs to include a paragraph, which requires that each user prints an updated page and adds it to the book. I don't know how I feel about this; on one side, I want to spend the 30GBP + shipping for this book, and on the other side, it causes me some uncomfortable itch to buy an item knowing that it is wrong or incomplete. What do you think about this? What would you do?

Has anybody read this adventure? Would you recommend it?

For full disclosure, I enjoyed the original Deep Carbon Observatory VERY MUCH, as it has the right amount of information I like in an adventure. It left many things untold, so I, as the GM, could fill in the blanks. However, I did not need the remastered edition, but I understand that less experienced GMs would need much more explanation and that their hands are held to be able to run the adventure.

I backed the kickstarter for a PDF and found myself disappointed. I'd never run the other Patrick Stuart adventures (although I own one), so maybe it plays better than it reads, but https://princeofnothingblogs.wordpress.com/2022/10/29/review-demon-bone-sarcophagus-osr-catastrophe - while hyperbolic - captured some of my disappointment.

Have you read Prince of Nothing's review of Demon-Bone Sarcophagus?  From what I've seen, the errata is the least of your worries...

Oops, didn't bother to read the 2nd post of this thread - to my detriment.  :(

a) @Naburimannu & @VengerSatanis: Thank you very much to both of you; that review didn't come up in my search!

b) WOW!! Just WOW!!!!! That was brutal, totally savage!!! And not only the review, the comments... THANKS again; this is exactly what I needed to make up my mind.

c) WHO is this PrinceofNothing?? How come I never heard of him before??? Now that I have a new source of information, I will be looking at his previous reviews and posts. Is he a member of this forum?

Prince of Nothing used to be a low-key nemesis (of the non-woke, non story-game variety) with RPG Pundit, so we don't talk about him much here.  They did kiss and make-up, though.  Prince has authored or co-authored 2 or 3 well-received OSR adventures.  He shoots from the OSR hip, takes few prisoners, has a sense of humor, dislikes art-punk, and these days he likes to keep a respectful distance from the Archduke of the OSR (me).  We have different visions of the OSR, I guess.

Yeah, his reviews and extremely longwinded, but entertaining.  He's reviewed a lot of my stuff, and mostly approved.

What a scathing review. It looked like it deserved it, too. It seems like the author of this adventure has no respect for his audience's time.

And that map is an offense agains gaming. I don't care how clever it is, it will be tedious in play. Oh look another choice of door on the left or door on the right! Exciting!
The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out
The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your teeth fall out
Your brains come tumbling down your snout
Be merry my friends
Be merry

Thank you for the story; it is very interesting! Now I will look more into the products of each one of you (Venger Satanis, Prince of Nothing, and RPG Pundit).

I tried to go to your blog, but it won't load here (it says, "The connection was timed out"); it may be due to my location. In DriveThruRPG I searched your name and the list has 65 items. Where do you recommend I start as someone new to your work?

Which rules do you use (I mean, like OD&D, B/X, some retro-clone, your own, etc)?

It is a pity, as I do like other of his books, but this will be a hard pass for me.

However, this issue has come with a silver lining, as I am now looking into other authors who also have exciting products!

That's weird about the blog loading issue, never heard of that happening before.  Try again sometime and see what happens.

I've used a lot of different OSR systems over the years, but settled on my own for the last few... Crimson Dragon Slayer D20.  It's a free PDF on DriveThru.  If you love sleazy retro space opera, go with Alpha Blue (setting + RPG).  If you want eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalypse campaign setting + dungeons, then I recommend Cha'alt.  If you want a weird pulp hexcrawl, then The Islands of Purple-Haunted Putrescence.  Those are good places to start.

If you're ready to make an investment in the physical books of the Cha'alt trilogy, let me know.  I sell them direct (they come with the PDFs), and they're high-quality, professionally printed hardcovers.  Sale continuing through New Year's Eve: https://vengersatanis.blogspot.com/2022/11/chaalt-for-holidays.html

I think the review is certainly hyperbole, but it starts with the bare facts and then layers opinion onto it. Which a good review should. I disagree with the degree of negativity expressed but not some of the main points. I backed the KS and asked what level this is actually aimed at to silence as the answer - I am guessing level 3. The map really is terrible. He had issues with the cartographer vanishing mid-flight (I think they are Ukrainian and maybe Russia invading was a reason), but the resulting map is one of the worst I have used to run a game.

Individual rooms and some of the base ideas are fine. The module struggles to hold together as an adventure overall.

Art work is great, though.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

To get started I downloaded Old School Renaissance Like A Fucking Boss, Crimson Dragon Slayer, and the preview of Cha´alt, the all look very good but I have not read them. I´ll get to it and comment more soon!

I hope the next adventures of the trilogy can improve the problems of the first one. However, maybe fewer people will get to read or play them, considering that fewer people will ever get to read or play the first one. So, for example, I will skip this one, and because I usually like to have complete collections, I will likely skip whatever comes next.
