This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Brainstorming: Science as Magic in a Post-Apoc setting

Quote from: winkingbishop;403183Something else to add to your reading/viewing list: Ralph Bakshi's Wizards.  This is an animated film set in a post-apocalyptic Earth that sees a return to magic after the slate is wiped clean.  Two brothers, the titular Wizards, have to throw down.  One is a lecherous, alcoholic but magically inclined Wizard.  The other gains most of his power by digging up and exploiting lost Earthing technology.  I think you'll get some mileage out of it.

Spoilers: There are Nazis.  Lots of mutant Nazis.

Love it...check out the Wizard RPG if you have a chance! Two source books are available,Montagar and Scorch,as well as the core rule book!:)

Just got Jorune 3ed. so am thinking crystal powers & bio-tech grown in pods/vats would be cool!
Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Running: AD&D 2nd. ed.

I have always wanted to see this movie.  Thanks for the reminder.

Also, thanks to all the responses.  No idea why I'd forgotten WH40K, but it's a goldmine.  I'll definitely use the idea of machine spirits and tech priests.

chemical reactions of various sort could seem like magic. - Alchemical "weapons" , flares, etc.  It's been ages since Chemistry so those are all I've got so far.

superglue - Instant Repair!  By what ancient craft does this wizard restore my pottery and tools!  I like it, simple and mystic.

acids - The Water That Burns.

polymers (?) like porcelain infused metal - who needs magic weapons/armor when you have advanced materials?  Plastic goods, synthetic fiber fabrics/clothes, light, durable construction material.

stealth tech. - "Invisibility" cloaks, night vision goggles, really most spy tech could work as wonderous items as well.

optics - night vision, heat vision, cameras/remote viewing

Nanotechnology - world of possibilities from medical and enhancement to information gathering/storing.  This might be my catch all catagory.

harmonic resonance - drawing blanks here

Energy projection - a half functional grid of beamed power fueling an array of unreliable forgotten tech.  Non-lethal energy weapons, lasers as magic wands, etc

Teleportation - the real magic.  Of course highly unreliable.

Regeneration of Tissue or Armor - subdermal armor, regenerative
nanobots, or a cloud of microscopic machines that intercept potentially harmful objects and disintegrate them

Anti-Gravity - flying vessels - sky chariots, giant steel birds/dragons, floating discs, etc

Cloaking / Invisibility Suits - 'nuff said.

Excellent stuff here.  It occurred to me that I might want to check out a Shadowrun or cyverpunk equipment book for more inspiration.

Bio-tech opens a whole new realm of possibilities.  I figure most non-humans in the setting are genetically engineered species.  Orcs, elves, and dwarves are ok, but the more esoteric the better.

I'm imagining a world where thousands upon thousands of years worth of technology is laying around.  Anything from modern computers powered by advanced batteries and built of nigh indestructible materials to crystal hologram projectors that create "hard light" images.

I've run this as an RPG before:

nice ideas all...by harmonic resonance I meant, basically, magic philosophy! All things resonate and those that resonate like may be manipulated for effect.

Check out the book 'The philosophy of magic' by Arthur Versluis or the RPG 'Highest Level of all' Fantasy Wargaming by Bruce Galloway.

a great example of harmonic resonance as science can be found in the movie 'From Beyond'.
Awesome flick...

Immagine tuning forks that can explode organs or cause temporary madness. That can manifest beings from other dimensions and bend them to your will. Healing, remote viewing, ellemental effects and teleportation can all be explained in this manner...:D

getting some cool ideas from this line of thinking...hmmm

Quote from: Cranewings;403199I fucking love that movie.

If you like wizards you might be interested to know 3 things:

1. Ralph Bakshi made it mostly as practice for his animated "LotR" movie which he made afterwards.

2. The original title was going to be "wizard's war" but george lucas asked him to change the title to avoid crossing over with "Star wars".

3. Ralph Bakshi is alive and well and working on a sequel to wizards.

Whenever I read about Aos' Metal Earth, for some reason I think it looks like Wizards.
