This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Outrageous!

So I get "Fighter" and "Wizard" for class choices? I thought it was "Fighting Man" and "Magic-User"...and then there's this level title implying that I played Magic, which I have not! Well, OK, I tried it a few times. Fine. So sue me. I like the new WotC minis too.

This is sort of 'meta', but I'll go with it anyway. Is there a focus to therpgsite? What I've noticed reading the posts here for the last few months is that most of the people on the internet I like, with the exception of a few hard-core old-school D&Ders from Knights & Knaves and Dragonsfoot and a few Forgites, seem to post here. So, I feel that I'm among spiritual comrades somehow...but why? Is there some common bond among the users here?

There's a bunch of different subforums, each with ti's own focus. This one's is "Role Playing Games." ;)

I see you are a 36th level magic user.
Are you in the Alphatian Grand Council?

I think the common bond here is a willingness to get over the arguments most of the time. People here disagree plenty, but they tend to keep them in their place and not take it with them to every thread. Of course there are exceptions, but I find it largely applicable.

As for content, I think we're a bunch of old-schoolers who are tempered by the presence of the saner of the new-school.

Cool, James. I didn't see a 'meta' forum and didn't think this exactly belonged in OT, but I'm sure I'll learn the ropes soon enough. Thanks!

Uh, we're united by the fact that we all pretty much hate the class choices? Seriously, though, welcome aboard!  Glad to see you here!  Here are some of the features that I like about this site:

*Musty old out-of-print games aren't considered beneath notice, but neither are they viewed as gospel.

*D20 is largely considered a servicable system with an ackowledged popularity.  It's neither the savior of the RPG world nor the devil incarnate.

*Frank, open discussion is encouraged.  Even if that means you have to use harsh language.

*We call each other on our bullshit.

No....actually, Calithena never made 36th level, but I have another character who did...he got killed at 20th and reincarnated as a Pit Fiend...also had a triple strength Rod of Rulership...those were some crazy days, back in the summer of '78, at the Los Altos Library RPG club...

Well, aside from we pretty much all seem to love gaming, we're really all over the map.

Hi Jeff! Good to see you here...I went to CU and defended my PhD but I was so busy I didn't have time to look you up after all. Too bad, but it's nice to be on a forum with you again!

That wasn't a dig about being in the wrong forum. You asked if there was a focus and compared to Dragonsfoot, the Forge, et. al. there really isn't. We talk about pretty much anything and everything in one section of the board or another.

Sorry, my sarcasm generator is on the fritz. :)

Ah, yes. Back in the day.

Those were the wildcatting days of RPGs...I had a good exchange with Greg Stafford about this; Greg wrote

QuoteAs I said, Dave [Hargrave, of Arduin fame] was a local gamemaster and, frankly, one of the best. He could narrate really well, keeping just enough suspense and surprise to make everyone enjoy it.

He had a regular group he played with and they got to umpty-ump levels of power. I remember one of my friends telling me about the climax of an adventure wherein they were in a bolo tank fighting off Smaug and Shelob. I think that was the one where the player, Rory Root who owns a local comic store now, rolled three or five criticals in a row and destroyed the monsters and brought the entire umpty-levels of the dungeon crashing down on them all.

This sort of craziness was fun.
