This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The 4e Avenger: how would you make an OSR equivalent?

I didn't feel like rewriting the 4e Avenger flavour text on my phone just yet. But yeah, they're supposed to be religious zealots with some divine powers. Trained by extremists of their faith.

I guess the restriction on the behaviour would be "Lawful" alignment combined with the DM and players agreeing not to be jackasses? I'd be fine with a Nemesis being a Dexter/vigilante style serial killer.
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

The 4e flavour text does pull it together nicely, yes.

QuoteIf so, then I don't know what Lawful has to do with it, the guy's a magical serial killer.

Like I said, it's a holy Batman, with all the quandaries that entails.

I played a 1/2 elf Assasin/Cleric called Orlock (big 2000 ad fan) back in 86 or so.

It had a load of the stuff highlighted in the class what with being an assasin and a cleric like.

Trouble was the DM decided that the god of death, whom I worshipped natch, was chaotic what with death being so seemingly random.

So one of the daily rituals was to select a person at random each day you had to kill. Could be a duke, could be a little kid whatever.
Also tended to be big on causing generally large scale destruction, starting fires, rigging machinery to collapse as it was lifting a block of stone that sort of thing.

Interesting character to play didn't really feel like I needed any special mechanical benefits beyond those the classes I already had.

I don't know about some Assassin/Monk/Paladin bullshite mashup but I'm seriously loving the 3 way split of the Paladin in 5e with a type that fits Elves finally. I mean if any race is the archetype for paladin it would be an elf (all three subraces basically fit each flavor easily).

Gotta agree.

If Glorfindel isn't a paladin, then who is...

Quote from: Planet Algol;773531Shockingly enough,  I don't have the book with the 4e Avenger in it,  but I dug what I've heard about it being a Severian/Batman esque holy warrior.

Would it be worthwhile trying to hack an oldschool D&D equivalent,  or just reskin the OD&D assassin?

Went ahead and did a quick-n-dirty version for Adventurer, Conqueror, King.
