While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). OSR - which would you play?

So I'm from a country where RPG isn't all that big and the only things played are 5e and Pathfinder (to a much lesser extent). Now, the group is dormant (planned) because of summer trips and parenthood, and I thought it would be nice to play an OSR TTRPG for a change. Done a little research and I come to two products, namely OSRIC and Basic Fantasy RPG. Which of these, if you have played any, do you prefer? I'm looking for something that, given my extensive collection of miniatures, is played preferably with miniatures. Or, if you have any other ideas, shoot!

Either 5e or a wargame, keeping in mind your extensive collection of miniatures. Osric and BF require imagination and therefore aren't for you.

Mainly depends how complex you want your game to be. OSRIC is a retro clone of 1e so it's considerably more complex than Basic Fantasy, which as the name suggests is loosely based on B/X.

Then there's the issue of PDF vs. print: the former is free for both but Basic Fantasy does printed copies super cheap (at cost).

Also ignore Dylan, he's just our latest troll. Probably a sock puppet for one who got banned recently, but that's just speculation on my part.

Well, then I stand corrected. I was going off your post count; I didn't click through to your profile to check. I'll make sure to do that in the future before slinging accusations of sock-puppetry, so thank you.

Doesn't change the fact that you're behaving like a troll.

I'd say given how you want to use minis 4E would be your best bet. It's much more like a video game style Tactical RPG and has a greater emphasis on minis. Which you'd like. I know of at least one person who combined 4E with Chainmail (DnD's wargame Dad) and it worked out quite well for large scale battles.

Also for a less traditional pick, Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a hybrid skirmish wargame and RPG using minis. That one can be played Solo if you want. It's a very cool game.

That's almost exactly what I said.

ACKS

Agreed. I actually think this fits what it sounds like OP wants better than either OSRIC or Basic Fantasy. Price could potentially be an issue but there's always the SRD:

Not exactly. I actually made some suggestions. You just bitched to make yourself feel better.

My own OSR neoclone, of course. ;)

I prefer BFRPG, but are you running a B/X or AD&D module? If that is the case, the answer becomes easier.

I own a bunch of miniatures, and I still like using my imagination. ;)
