OSR - which would you play?

Sacrificial Lamb

I'd choose OSCRIC, because I like AD&D.

Either 5e or a wargame, keeping in mind your extensive collection of miniatures. Osric and BF require imagination and therefore aren't for you.
Yeah what the fuck man. Stop being an asshole.
The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out
The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your teeth fall out
Your brains come tumbling down your snout
Be merry my friends
Be merry

I'd play 1e AD&D, so if I were choosing between clones I'd pick OSRIC.
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Moldvay (it's right next to me) with a sprinkling of classes from various OSR games.
Running: HarnMaster and Baptism of Fire

Why don't you pick on King Tyranno as well? He suggested the same as me. Time to get of the internet and shake some dice, dude.

OSRIC has just enough changes from first edition to infuriate me. If you want a first edition clone then try Joe Bloch's Adventures Dark and Deep.

S'mon

So I'm from a country where RPG isn't all that big and the only things played are 5e and Pathfinder (to a much lesser extent). Now, the group is dormant (planned) because of summer trips and parenthood, and I thought it would be nice to play an OSR TTRPG for a change. Done a little research and I come to two products, namely OSRIC and Basic Fantasy RPG. Which of these, if you have played any, do you prefer? I'm looking for something that, given my extensive collection of miniatures, is played preferably with miniatures. Or, if you have any other ideas, shoot!

OSRIC gives a nice mid-1980s AD&D experience, Basic Fantasy is early 1980s B/X D&D experience. I like and have run both. OSRIC is a bit more complex, and has more powerful characters. B/X is simpler and more streamlined. Both work fine with minis.

When running swords & sorcery like Wilderlands I prefer OSRIC, in particular the weapon spec rules make powerful warrior PCs even at low level, and quick bloody combat.
For classic dungeon delving, Basic Fantasy is great, and a huge plus is that the books and adventures have print versions sold at-cost.

I think if you are just gaming over the summer, I lean to OSRIC for short term campaigns, because of the powerful starting PCs. Max hp at 1st level is a good idea too. But if you want the classic "running away from 4 orcs" feel, then Basic Fantasy.

Granted, but I've played TOTM WAY longer than I have played with miniatures.

I'd say given how you want to use minis 4E would be your best bet. It's much more like a video game style Tactical RPG and has a greater emphasis on minis. Which you'd like. I know of at least one person who combined 4E with Chainmail (DnD's wargame Dad) and it worked out quite well for large scale battles.

Also for a less traditional pick, Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a hybrid skirmish wargame and RPG using minis. That one can be played Solo if you want. It's a very cool game.

That's almost exactly what I said.
Not exactly. I actually made some suggestions. You just bitched to make yourself feel better.

Eh, he's entitled to his opinion. Maybe I should not have emphasised on the miniatures collection, that is not at all the most important thing for me, but since they're here, well... I've been "following" D&D since the early nineties (children's books yaay) and "more actively" since the early 2000s so I know quite a lot, I presume, yet, active playing I only started a year or so before the great mainstream spike. And that also includes 4E, which I know is not what I'm looking for ;)
