This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[OSE] I got to play OSE finally

I enjoy advanced OSE a lot more than AD&D. You have all the cool stuff, like seperate race & class , with a smoother playing gaming system without all the funky corner case rules. Anything from AD&D that I do want, such as spells and magic items, I can just bring them on in and it still works. Getting prepped for a new campaign soon.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Quote from: Zenoguy3 on June 06, 2024, 02:12:31 PMOSE is great as a translation of B/X to English from High Gygaxian. That's what makes it such a good baseline for OSR games, since it is the very essence of OSR, with no filler.
I think anybody that wants to get into OSR should start by playing at least a few games of OSE, and move on from there.

Well I definitely would look at other OSR games for other genres but as far as fantasy gaming, OSE is all I need.

Quote from: Zenoguy3 on June 06, 2024, 02:12:31 PMDCC definitely has a fair number of rules that can bog the game down, and I think the whole dice chain concept is too cute by half. I personally like the funnel rule, but I can see people preferring it to be an optional rule as opposed to the baseline.

The rule is one of the major reasons I would never play DCC again.  It's just stupid.  If I want to play someone with no power who is just a person, well I do that every day being me.

Yeah I am playing in a AD&D 2e game and I have to admit, I prefer OSE over AD&D.  There is just something about AD&D that just doesn't do it for me.  But hey, everyone is different.

Have you check out Dragonslayer? It matches pretty close to exactly what you're talking about. Although if your already adept at porting AD&D stuff into an OSE game, you probably don't need a book that does it for you, kek.

I haven't actually.  With all of the old B/X stuff available and all of the OSE stuff available and the material I can bolt in, OSE does all the fantasy I need.

Real AD&D (1st) is the best RPG ever created. Preferring something a little simpler is not bad, but eventually you'll come around.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

Played 1st edition and I hated it because of how poorly it is organized.  Gary Gygax had a lot of talents, organization is not one of them
