Had someone drop a single 1 star rating on my game with no comment or explanation. I understand it isn't perfect, but it is free, so why waste your time to vote down something you didn't even pay for? Hell, give me a reason for the one star that way I can improve it ... I'm guessing they are a SJW type and they saw that I'm lightly active over here... oh well rant over...
If something is open to Ratings, some people will give a good rating and some will give a poor rating. Not everyone thinks the same about a product, not everyone likes it and there are things like Cost vs Quality to consider.
Some people rate everything they buy, some people only put a rating for the products they like.
I wouldn't be too bothered about it. What is important is the overall Rating, not the individual ones.
Was it one of those comedy 1 page products? Those are annoying enough I can see someone rating a 1 just because of general principle.
nope, full game, 46 pages + cover ... It's more the rating without comment that bugs me more than anything... how am I supposed to fix what is wrong without input...
Some people also get confused and think that 1 is best. On the other hand, it's not uncommon to get 1-star ratings because it doesn't do what they want even though what it does is explained before they order it.
I agree with Brett. People get confused with stars and you see it regularly with 1-5 ratings for surveys. I think an A through F grade might be better, but I don't know if that's universal.
Shrug off the one star and focus on the productive comments instead.
If necessary, you could always get a 5 star click to bring back balance...
It's worth remembering that people tend to rate based on their overall experience, some of which is beyond your control. DTRPG's web site might have been unresponsive, for instance. Or, if there was a POD option, they were sent the wrong book, or the book was damaged. Or sometimes it's a single issue -- maybe they were offended by one line. Or they just didn't like it, but didn't want to be bothered to take the time to turn that general impression into a specific critique.
Ultimately, there's nothing you can really do about it.

You see that with surveys a lot because they keep flipping what 1 and 5 mean, but in a 1 to 5 star rating system, a 1 is pretty unambiguous.

For better or worse you're not alone.
I've had one guy give a Dungeon World class my girlfriend did a 2-star rating because he looked at it and declared that it was completely broken. She explained that we not only accepted a bunch of feedback prior to its release, we also playtested the class in a level 1-7 campaign (Expedition to Castle Ravenloft using Dungeon World rules), but he completely disregarded her evidence. Thing is you can see the base class legally, for free, so it's not like he was blindsided by what it was about or what it could do.
There's also a guy that accused me and my girlfriend of copying some of his DW classes, even though we hold class votes, letting people both provide the choices
and vote on them, and the end result is nothing like what he did. We've gotten a few 1-star ratings (no reviews) on some of those classes, so you might be right in SJW-types not liking you and doing it purely out of spite. Depends on what you did or didn't do.
While on the subject of SJWs, I've received 1-star ratings for publishing RPGPundit's stuff.
As a consumer it bugs me when people give a one star rating without explanation. Particularly when the other ratings are generally high. I would like to know why the person didn't like it. It helps inform my decision whether to buy it or not.
And then if they complain about the website or something like that instead of commenting on the product... grrrr.

I agree. I've been saying it for years: if you rate something 1 star, you should have to explain why.

Yeah, this is a common SJW tactic.

I thought you could only rate something (1-star or otherwise) if you purchased it? Do you have free products that got 1-star ratings, or are you saying that people actually spent money on your/my books just to give them 1-star ratings?

You do have to purchase it. I don't remember what they were now. It's actually been a while since it's happened. This might have been before you had to buy it.

I see. I've noticed that none of the RPGPundit Presents issues have any 0-star ratings, luckily.
How many people purchase RPGNow products based on their rating? It might give a visibility boost to very highly rated products, since you can filter them by rating, but I doubt it would have a strong effect on your average supplement.
Also, some people hating you and your stuff can be a compliment. Would you want to be liked by turbo-SJWs? Why?
What game was it?
Tangentially: is there some way to quickly find the ratings I've given and the reviews I've written? I'm not finding it in DTRPG, and I think I've given reasons for most of my low ratings but I wanted to be sure.

Maybe they're osr players and lower is better to them
Interestingly on Amazon and the like, lower-star reviews have more views than higher-star ones. People tend to assume that higher-star reviews are bullshit (since you can buy them, after all), and lower-star ones are sincere. But if there's no accompanying text they assume it's bullshit either way.
As well, lower-star text reviews tend to be longer, because people have more to say when they're upset than when they're happy. The OP's starting this thread is a good example of this.

stars with no explanations really mean little, I take more credence in 2-4 ratings (with no explanation). Its a fact that a lot of people (me included) wont give "10s" on surveys, so one company I know tries to game the system by having their surveys rank between 1-7 (with the same results...)

You're not wrong. I've made a good deal of fame and fortune thanks to people who despise me.
