This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

On the overapplication of the term "furry".

Quote from: RPGPunditI feel your pain, Wil.  I was a big fan of the original TMNT comic (and of course, the brilliant RPG by Erick Wujcik!), and generally dug furry fandom; until it very quickly got taken over by their very own lawncrappers.  Now the whole scene is toxic, and you can't touch the stuff from risk of being even associated with those weird fuckers...

RPGPundit

Just take the tack I do:  Don't give a shit.  If you like what you like, screw what anybody thinks.  Correct them if they get the wrong impression about you.  If they're dicks about it, sock 'em one.

You already do it with RPGs and "the swine."  Furry fandom's only different in that it's overrun.  Instead of Ronny you had Mark Merlino.  But he got in on the ground floor and now the furry freak flag flies free.

And it's not like there's anything wrong with being a freak or a sexual deviant (so long as it's harmless).  It's just that the hobby wasn't and shouldn't be about sexual fetishism.  It puts people off.  People like you, and Wil...

Quote from: WilI actually don't care either, but I am serious about the "fandom" souring my setting for me. Really, I would probably run it amongst friends but I would never, for example, put it on a website for fear of the email I would receive.

That's truly sad.  It sounds cool.  There's not enough good furry games on the market, IMO.

Quote from: SilverlionMakes me really want to write my Pulp furry game now :D

Heck, I'd playtest it.

Considering the recent thread about mecha...

Aggregate Cognizance - RPG blog, especially if you like bullshit reviews

Quote from: WilConsidering the recent thread about mecha...

One of my first BESM games was this:

In the 23rd century mankind is at war with his own creations--the Clannish
Breed, engineered to serve mankind as companions, servants, and soldiers over two centuries ago.
The breed fight to free themselves from slavery and oppression—those born free a mere decade and a half ago have taken a new name for themselves: The Wildbreed

Clans and Septs:
Most of the clans’ names are based of the progenitor species of the bulk of its members but not all of the Clans are made up of entirely related species.
Clan Wolf has 78% Dog, wolves and fox derived Breeds, but also fill the other 22% with raccoons, bears, pandas, and a variety of cats. Only a very few Septs exist that have a “pure breed” mix. The PrideKin is made up of purely Lion derived breeds
and the Berserk Sept only fills it’s ranks with Bear derived breeds.

Total ‘Free’  Breed population:
    340,289 wolves
    908,390 dogs
    344,348 foxes
    99,982    lions
    88,989    tigers
    3,000      raccoons
    86,565    bears
     1,459     others

It is estimated that approximately two million breed are enslaved within the NorAm Alliance, another three million spread across Uropax, and half a million in PanChin Republic. (the PanChin Republic seems to have some residual reincarnations beliefs that keep them from tampering too much with the natural order.)
The numbers in the SolAm States, and the IndAf Nation are unknown.

The breed divide themselves into what they do
“Hunters” get food, “Artificer’s” build things, Den-mother (or father) care for the young of the tribe, “Gatherers” steal from human cities, or ruins, and Warriors fight against the humans when and where they can.

Clan Wolf
78% of it’s members are derived from Canine or Vulpine stock and it was founded by Dr. Volpone when he freed himself and a number of breeds from the Helix Dynamics Corporation.

Septs:  Soulhunter, Moonchild

Clan Kitsune
  Septs: Ninetail, Redshadow.

Clan Great Bear
  Sept: Frostreaver, Berzerk

Clan WarCat
  Sept: Pridekin, LoneHunters

Appearance: The Breed are anthropomorphic animals, with very human traits,  but they still possess their animal birthrights: furs, claws, and teeth, although they have an upright stance with plantigrade feet.

   Wildbreed Alpha
    Chapter 1: Seeds of Tomorrow
The characters are introduced, as the Clan’s have gathered amidst the ruins of the Old City (Once Houston, Texas) and meet in the center of a fallen ruin, there all the Septs of all the clans gather and put forth their best to be granted the right to be Warriors, to clamber into the few Predators and fight against the humans. The rites involves games, mock combats and finally true ritual tests engineered to push the characters to the edge of their instincts, and to the brink of primal bloodlust, the test ends when they restrain themselves and prove they are above mere animals.

“Rite of War”
The rite of passage consists of a series of tests, physical, mental, and in some cases it is claimed spiritual tests.  The tests begins simply the rules are laid out carefully and the privileges and duties of those who pass, then they ask for all those who feel “They have the blood to stand judgment.” One must volunteer himself or herself and no one wishing to take the test can be refused, although females are discouraged subtly by peer pressure, simply because fertile females are far to rare and with the Clans few numbers relatively speaking it’s dangerous for them as a viable species to allow fertile females to risk life and limb (the breeds being in part engineered for combat seem to male heavy although the ratio is slowly balancing itself out.) Anyone of any age may take the Rite of War and earn the right to pilot a mecha, however it can only be done at a Great Clan Gathering (Often called “Liberties”)

            Primary Events:
Once the players have passed the tests they awarded with their Predators they are given a few days to get familiar with the controls which vary only slightly from the training controls. Once they’ve had those few days to gain some comfort with their mechas they are sent on a mission to raid a train for power cells. For although the breed rely mostly
on solar power to recharge their power cells they don’t have enough cells
for construction, and military hardware. The power cells in question are being moved via armored turbo-rail through the wilderness.  Since the rail-tube construction is incomplete
(they haven’t yet finished laying the entire tubes shell although the rail has been laid) it is the perfect time to hijack the cars and steal the power cells. Of course the train carries a  number of VGII’s as guard.  This raid should go in the Pc’s favor, since the raid is carefully planned, and the human guard are ill prepared for a fairly equal battle.

(I snipped out the horrible Ms Paint derived maps)

“Caravan of Tears”
The Wildbreed heroes are asked to enter into the domed Arcology of Coast City and rescue small group of shackled breeds who have escaped and are living in the underground waste processing tunnels nicknamed “the Warrens.”  The heroes receive a barely audible, yet powerfully boosted radio signal.   This is Rex in the   Coast City Warrens….trapped by secdrones. Unable to escape, help requested of any free Breed, repeat 70 breed kits and adults trapped in Coast City Warrens this is Rex please respond VOX: “Signal Lost”

Common Equipment:

Vox: Personal Radios worn around the neck like a torque, uses computer enhancements to boost signal, filter out noise, and scramble the signal.

C^2band: Computers used by humans primarily, a bout the size of a normal wristwatch voice activated.

SWC-229a: Smith,Wesson and Colt High Velocity Auto-fire pistol, a light SMG
Similar to the Mac-10, and Uzi of earlier era’s it’s the standard fire-arm of the
23rd Century mecha pilot fires high-density plastic slugs via chemical block propellant. (Machine Pistol)

12mm “Blitz”: The breed secondary weapon when on foot, the “Blitz” are finely crafted pistols—usually made by the Sept’s Artificer, each one unique to the individual in appearance, number of shots vary from 5 round revolvers to 10 shot clip fed varieties.

RG4-10: A standard infantry weapon for the humans, a bull-pup, cylinder-clip rifle Capable of full auto fires similar ammo to the SWC above.  (Assault Rifle)

Slave drones

Slave drones are mecha with little more than rudimentary Artificial intelligence.
Slave drone mecha release a small high pitched sound that non slave mecha sensors can detect—that is human mecha, the ‘breed are not aware of it consciously but most hear the signal-barely and sense a wrongness with the mecha knowing they can be targeted and destroyed without ‘Breed being harmed. Slave Drones essentially have the AI attribute at level 3.

The humans use Slave drones, Shackled and Loyalist ‘breeds along with a human pilots. The Wildbreed use Mecha built from scavenged battlefield remains. The Wildbreed's individualism combined with a need to disguise the mix and match mecha they use leads them to paint their mecha in a variety of color—usually with traits from their original species, while human mecha all appear the same dull olive drab, blue, or khaki.

Shackled Breeds are those who are enslaved. Usually they are fitted with a Cerebral Inhibitor (a small device that unless it receives a signal every 20 nanoseconds literally disconnects the Breeds conscious thought and puts them in a simulated coma)/ The CI is signaled by a device called a “leash” worn by their commander on his wrist—often included in a chronometer of some sort.

Loyalist breed’s are often loyal because they’ve earned themselves some degree of “freedom” and personal wealth, even if they are slaves.

As for the Pulp "furry" game (think more TMNT than FURRY) I'm still trying to decide how to handle the Nazi's--I was thinking dogs (with wolves being the 'Aryan' replacements) when I figure out how much I want to say with the animal types, then I'll be rolling, right now I don't want them to JUST be masks for different humans, but I do want to say something about the nature of "people".

She was one seriously fucked up lady. Had one scene where her lover tells her, "Dammit, a man can only do it so often before he needs to rest!" She eventually got treated for her sex addiction, but being a cat lady was not something she could do a damn thing about.

The whole thing was planned as a tetralogy where a mystery is solved, a people saved, and Dr. Janice Wain PHD (xenobiology) comes to accept herself. Even has the hysterectomy her parents inflicted on her refused (her future society has the medical technology).

The exhibitionism? Cats are exhibitionists, women are exhibitionists ("Damn right I'm a glorious piece of work."), you do the math. :)

There's a problem with the whole "furry" thing that goes beyond just the fetishism.  While it seems pretty likely that, at this point, the majority of "furries" are people who get off on the stuff, there's the equally bad problem that today the word is pretty well COMPLETELY associated with people who range from "identifying" to actually fucking believing themselves to be an anthropomorphic animal themselves.

The term used to merely be for people who enjoyed the art.  I was that kind of "furry fan". There's absolutely no room for that kind of "furry fan" in the um.. "Hobby" anymore.

I can only apologize if you've felt marginalized or unwelcome by the hobby as it stands.  I know I don't participate in it actively any more myself.

That said, I'm still unapologetic about what I like.  Eastman and Laird comics are what I grew up on, and I still love furry stuff.

As a huge Turtles fan, I must ask, shouldn't that be "Scaly" rather than "Furry?"

Quote from: J ArcaneDude, there have been elements of that in existence in sci-fi and cyberpunk for eons.  CP2020 had them.  THS has them.  In fact, as I've always seen it, it seems a basic assumption, a trope, of science fiction that if genetic manipulation technology is available, someone will use it to hybridize people with animals.

Indeed. I've seen folks over at that forum profess their furry-hate over Traveller's vargr.

QuoteJust because you got scarred by bad Doug Winger art some time ago, doesn't mean you need to go branding everything that looks vaguely like an animal as "furry" and badwrong.

I'm no major anthropomorphics fan, but it baffles me when people throw a hissy fit because I have the wherewithal to include a *gasp* cat race in my D&D setting or game.
