SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Keith Parkinson! So that's the guy! Yeah, he definitely captured a lot of that TSR D&D mood for me. Something about his high detailed vistas. The current trend of xtreme! washed out, fuzzy backgrounds doesn't really work for me because I don't think eyes truly work that way. Eventually fuzzy, yes, but not so soon, and palettes fading into pastels, not so reliably (time of day lighting matters).

My duck-duck-go-fu pales to yours!
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Quote from: Dave R;950795Was reminded while searching though that Conan had a different look before Frazetta and Schwarzenegger.

He still has that look, if you read Howard's stories. The text hasn't changed, it's just that body-wise, Arnie has never been a good fit for the role:).

This picture, however, or a picture of a similarly-looking heavyweight boxer/MMA fighter, would be a good representation;).

And I still... haven't found... what I'm looking for...  [/singing]

Seriously though, my google-fu is failing me.  There was a poster a boss of mine had on his shop wall, of a black-robed and bearded wizard flanked by (or facing?) a disparate bunch of demons.  And this guy wasn't even a gamer, he just thought it looked cool, so maybe it was a rock and roll thing and not a nerd-core thing?  But it didn't have any band name or title, just a straight up illo.  Had a very 60s or 70s look to it, though that could be deliberate and done later.

It's driving me nuts, but here's something else entirely I stumbled across while looking.  Cover from an otherwise regrettable fantasy series, but stripped of context it's a very D&D moment to me.

Also I put a name to the artist who illustrated some of Lovecraft's paperbacks:  Gervasio Gallardo.  I'd love to find some of these in full poster size, without the titles.

the unmistakable album cover stylings of Rodney Matthews:

Some of those remind me how much Rodney Matthews 'inspiration' there is in certain parts of World of Warcraft... particularly Outland, with its sky islands, mushroom forests, and its insects... and the general color pallet.
