This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Og: The Quest for Beer

I love the new edition of Og.  It's hilarious.

It's a game where you're only allowed a few words with which to communicate in character.

I have developed a Con Scenario for it, called the Quest for Beer in honor of Brewfest, where I shall debut the game.

The game starts off with a speech from the Chief, requesting the PCs (the best warriors of the day) to go find him the "magical drink" of the tribe to the North.

His speech for the PCs is rendered thusly:

Quote from:  Chief Bear Killer::grunt:: You.  Me Grotnak Big Hairy Cave Smelly, You :: point at ground::.  You Go.  Go ::Points over shoulder (north)::, Small Cave, Food Water...Food Water Me.  Me Bang Bang, You Bang BANG!  Go, Me, Food Water.

Which Translates as:
QuoteHello Brave warriors.  I, chief Grotnak the Bearkiller, have gathered you here today to bear witness: I have a mission for you brave warriors to undertake.  The tribe to the far north has created a wonderful think with no name, a new drink that I wish to have.  Our tribe is the strongest and the fastest, and you are the strongest and fastest warriors we have.  Go, and bring me this new drink!

The simplicity of the scenario is part of the game.  Basically, the PCs have to figure out what it is they have to go get, and then bring it back.  I believe the opening speech conveys this well, without them knowing the translation, of course.

My question to you is: should I change "Food Water" to "Thing?"  That way it opens it up a bit, but then it's not the quest for beer, now is it?

Whatcha think?

"Food Water" doesn't convey the message well, IMO.  Certainly "thing" doesn't either.  How about "Good Water"?

Or maybe Fire Water?

I think you need to make a special word for beer, so the players can say it over and over again in a desperate voice like "atraa... atraa..." in Quest for Fire, but more like "beeroo... beeroo...".

Awesome idea, btw.  Sounds like it would be hilarious both to play and watch.

Food Water just makes me want to bring him back a sammich and a soda. Maybe Dizzy Water?

happy water works well, too:drunk: :DRUNKANI:

dar

foam water?
medicine water?
thick water?
soggy bread?

Edit: Meat n potatoes water? Bitter water?

joewolz

Well, I want it to be ambiguous, just not too ambiguous, and the whole game only has 18 words possible.

All 18 words are listed on the character sheet (a pdf).

Fire water works, but isn't beer.

I'd go with Big Water or Shiny Water.

And Verisimilitude? Something tells me I at least have to read this game.

After looking at the character sheet. I'd go with three words.

Shiny Sleep Water.

I was just going to suggest "Hairy Bang Water".

Also, Joe, did you consider calling the scenario "Clan of the Cave Beer"?

!i!

LOL, no, I didn't, but that's pretty cool!

The game wen toff without a hitch last night...but it plays fast.  The game seems to be better suited to a group that really doesn't know each other very well, since my regular group was able to play off each other and defeat things rather easily.
