This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Yup, that's it about banding!  8) Combat damage distribution. Lightning Bolt's damage is Instant direct damage, not from a creature, not during a combat exchange of power. Same reason a blocking Timmy tapping to direct damage a Mesa Pegasus after blocks declared, but before combat damage resolution, did not trigger banding's benefit. Very easy.  ;) But then it all changed after The Stack.  :o

Also, now that WotC has been vociferously defended they now have Typal & Type... which simplifies everything, right? You'll see rules confusion issues of this in under 5 years. It's the same for everything that tries to rule from a statutory standard instead. You cannot account for all bleeding edge conditions, past and future without a judge. Same as it's ever been.

That's why this reminds me of the chasing the dragon struggle AEG went through with L5R for over 20 years with its 'Foo' Rule.  ;D Been there, done that, got several t-shirts from CCG tournaments, kinda glad that it's not my concern anymore.  :D Being CCG retired is rather nice!
