This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

New GSL revision?

I heard today, in capacity of rumour, that WoTC has once again revised the GSL, at this point allowing companies to continue producing books for earlier editions if they also publish 4e products?
Is this true?

The letter sent by Scott Rouse to publishers:

[QUOTE="Scott]Publishing friends,

I just wanted to let you know that the revision of GSL that we announced back in August 2008 is going live today (it should go up around 4PM PST). I have posted a copy for your reference.

Also a revised SRD, logos, and updated FAQ are being posted to: http://www.wizards.com/d20

Highlights include:

    * Removal of section 6, which set terms & conditions for 4e compatible product lines that may have been previously published under the Open Game License (OGL).
    * Inclusion of a provision for a “Notice of Termination”, allowing publishers to end their use of the GSL at their choosing. This includes the addition of a 6-month inventory sell off period after executing a Notice of Termination.
    * Modification to imagery clause that clarifies use derivative art work.
    * Additions to the SRD from Player’s Handbook® 2, Monster Manual® 2, and Adventurer’s Vault™ including:
          o Barbarian, bard, druid, and sorcerer class options
          o Alchemy, alchemical formula template, and alchemical items
          o Vehicles, mounts, and the vehicle template
          o Disease template
          o Demons, devils, rust monster, metallic dragons, duergar, and over 50 other monsters

I hope you find the revisions to your liking and I want to thank you for your patience as we revised the GSL.

Sincerely,

Scott Rouse

They can still revoke the GSL or modify it whenever they want, you'll notice.

Captain Rufus

Looks like they are backtracking in a standard corporate way.  As little as possible and hoping it'll take.

Clearly the GSL and 4e hasn't done what they wanted it to, and their position of strength isn't that strong, thus they ease back a bit.

jgants

Huh - I think the oddest thing is that they included the full list of MM2 monsters in it.  Had that been released before?
Now Prepping: One-shot adventures for Coriolis, RuneQuest (classic), Numenera, 7th Sea 2nd edition, and Adventures in Middle-Earth.

Recently Ended: Palladium Fantasy - Warlords of the Wastelands: A fantasy campaign beginning in the Baalgor Wastelands, where characters emerge from the oppressive kingdom of the giants. Read about it here.

Narf the Mouse

Looks to me like the sort of thing that could be generally acceptable, from that list. Still to be seen wether it's too late or not, but I imagine having to junk entire 3e product lines was a big downturn.
The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

In this respect it is no different than the d20 Trademark license.

Absolutely. It is however completely different from the OGL.

Which should come as no surprise since the OGL lead to people making bank on Wizards IP without any money filtering back.

Which was by design. Helping to make d20 the de facto game system for RPGs was just a silly side effect...  :rolleyes:
"Meh."
