This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Music...Do you ever hear the Music? The soundtrack of your adventures?

Do you hear the music?

By this I mean Have you ever had a game going so good that you could almost hear the adventurous background music playing - and YET THERE WAS NO MUSIC BEING PLAYED IN THE ROOM.

This may be why D&D never really "stuck" for me as a game when I was a player.  I never heard the music kick in.

TRAVELLER - that happened  in some sessions where I felt the whole damn orchestra kick in full theater quadrophonic multi-track stereo sound.

now that Imostly GM all the time ....I hope the Music kicks in for my players. When I GM  its sometimes like a "split-screen" experienmce I may know some stuff thats about to happen because I'm running the NPCs and I'm the Gm - but I also feel like a spectator at a movie Theater watching the player characters are dpoing as if they are main characters in a movie or TV show being projected on a big screen in front of me. About every 4 or 5 sessions I still get that "background Music kicking in" feel when I'm running a game.  A part of my brain goes : "Holy Shit! This is a good show...whats gonna happen next?"

Usually the "MUSIC" that I hear is that Alan Parsons swashbuckling riff from LADYHAWKE, or the Indiana Jones march, sometime its the Imperial March from the STAR WARS movies....that kind of thing.

There actually was a FASA-style STAR TREK game years ago(mid '80s) ...where at the end there was a very dramatic rescue by shuttlecraft - we all started humming the Indiana Jones theme from when the plane took off in the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I dig it, man!  In a rockin' D&D session the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack is usually playing through my head, occasionally interrupted by some totally sweet guitar riffs.

Not so much since we usually have music playing in the background.  However, sometimes you get those great moments of synergy where the track that is playing totally vibes with what you are listening to.  Usually results in a second pause for everyone to look at each other and smile that knowing smile.

Only if you're playing a Kender.

I use a lot of music when I GM (and I usually GM) so I'm probably not the best person to answer the original question.  There are certain albums/tracks that get associated with given scenes/characters/events, but that's not the same thing.

I normally don't get to play music during our game sessions. One player, she requested that we don't one time because she finds it easier to focus on the game when there is No Cd playing.

During My BANESTORM campaign I got to sneak in Battle music from CONAN during a big fight scene. Using a remote I gradually upped the volume - that time she didn't mind so much because it fit the big battle vs. Templar Knights.  She got a kick out of it.

Most game tho - no music ...unless we "hear the music" like I describe in the opening post.

When the game is going well, I usually have some soundtrack going through my head. It's usually the other way around - the music playing in my car or at home makes me think of certain games.

Good stuff. :)

Here's my gaming music:

Battlelore -- these guys might be LARPers (!)  Not my favourites... but the costumes are fun.

Lordi -- If you like Metal + Monsters in your gaming. ;)
EDIT: This one is a bit sillier... and therefore BETTER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqBGffYpE9I

Bling Guardian -- listen to Mirror Mirror, find and listen to Battlefield!

Summoning -- RRRRRAAAAAA!!!!  No other band compares.

Here's a music video from My Barbarian that includes dice rolling and D&D awesomeness:

That was....interesting. :)

Blind Guardian kicks ass.

Forgot all about these guys... Corvus Corax - go to the music section in the samples area and you can listen to stuff from their various cd's. They're wierd, but fun.

My personal soundtrack has never ever even come close to being similar to anyone else's (that I've personally gamed with), so I'm not allowed to pick music for a game session. :D

All the "cool" kids loved Teh MetalS!!!! :emot-rock:

Me: :ACFC08: :discoball: :cyborg:

My soundtrack is... Pet Shop Boys (electro pop) + Sisters of Mercy (goth industrial?) + Front242 (EBM) + Aphex Twin (electronica) + DJ Shadow (trip hop)

examples:
  • Creepy horror atmosphere: Aphex Twin's selected ambient works vol. 2
  • Kicking ass and taking names: Dunkelwerk's Troops
  • Planning and Plotting: Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunities (Let's make lots of money)"
I know: weird...!

I now have a searing mental image of Tolkien's elves setting sail for the Undying Lands to the sound of "Go West."

You sir, are evil.
