This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Wait, what?  Obviously, I'm not keeping up with all this new stuff, but I gotta know... the current/old DDI stuff wasn't Mac-friendly?

Wonder if this will lead to tons of DDI cancellations, and significantly reduced online revenue.

The aftermath could be more heads being rolled in the IT and marketing divisions, in an early mid-2011 WotC layoffs season.

Maybe they don't care because design on 5th edition already started.

I'd guess that quite a large number of their "subscribers" were probably just signing up for a month, downloading everything and then unsubscribe.  That's certainly what I would have done if I would have ever tried it.  They'll probably lose the bulk of those accounts.

I knew several 4E players from my previous 4E games, who did exactly that.

Two of them mentioned to me they have absolutely no intention of using any 4E Essentials rulebooks, nor any future rulebooks which they think are too "Essentials"-like (whatever they mean by that).  I would guess as far as they're concerned, Heinsoo 4E D&D is a "complete" system to them with a final DDI character builder up to August 2010 (excluding Dark Sun).

What if Dragon and Dungeon go "online only" as well?

Hmmm ... As in restricting which particular issues can be accessed?  (ie.  Going away from a flat rate subscription).

Like "no PDFs". Everything online. Has to be accessed with a live Internet connection, iPad, whatnot.

Good question.

If the web pages are not prevented from bring printable, in principle they can be copied.  Albeit a tedious process.

If there are all kinds of DRM and other crap making it hard to copy or print directly, then it would involve fishing around a web browser's cache to get and save the content.  Another messy process.  It would be like trying to retrieve the flv video files off of youtube, if one wants to save them on disk.

Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Ha!! Try Gencon 2011. Essentials is pretty much the Windows Me of 4th edition.

Well, I just sent out my email to my group saying that I will not allow any use of the new character builder to create or maintain characters for my campaign.

This is bullshit and I absolutely refuse to go along with WotC's crap on this.
