This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Barrowmaze: Giving Credit Where Its Due

I've been running the PCs through the Barrowmaze which I've fitted into my Dark Albion game; as of last weekend (I think the 4th session they've been in there now) they're still loving this dungeon (and this is a group that doesn't always like dungeon-crawling; they quickly grew tired of the Pod Caverns, for example), and that last session produced one of the most memorable in-dungeon combat scenes I've had the pleasure to run in a very very long time.

For those who know the book, it was in area #110.  The whole thing was an amazing clusterfuck. The players were blown away.

It is a very awesome midmegadungeon!  I need to pick up the second book.  One good thing about the first module is that he gave the early buyers a free upgrade to the updated module after the IGG fininshed.  The revised module is even cooler than it was originally.
Miniature Mashup with the Fungeon Master  (Not me, but great nonetheless)

I can't speak for Barrowmaze II, but after the BM II IGG a great deal of groovy additional art was added to the BM I pdf (there was also a price increase).  I believe there were also some errata fixes and edits.

The unfortunate thing is I printed out the pre IGG BM I, so I can only enjoy the new art as digital bits atm.

The cool thing about the module is that it is written as a pick up and play module, you only need to read a few pages in the beginning and don't need to internalize the entire module.

Barrowmaze is pretty cool. It's more of a huge single dungeon level with multiple entrances than a "mega-dungeon" per se, but it's well done, assuming you're into having LOADS of undead in a focused setting. I like it, personally.

Thanks to the OP. Glad to see you are having fun.

In terms of size, I can't stand megadungeons that you have no realistic chance of completing. Thus Barrowmaze is big, but not crazy so.

Barrowmaze has many layers there are all sorts of homages, hidden meanings, and tie-ins if you read closely.

I didn't mean it as a slight, to be clear! That's why the dungeon medium is cool: it can be used in many, many ways to create different settings with different assumptions! Personally, I love huge dungeons that become the adventuring center of gravity for years and years of campaign, maybe even generations of different characters, the setting and people evolving throughout, the whole taking a life of its own, and so on. The expectation for me isn't to complete the dungeon or clean up entire levels, it's to fulfill targeted objectives, explore further, and survive at the end of the day! :)

I actually like the fact that it's a single big level, honestly. It makes it very easy to plug into a mega-dungeon: it could be located under that graveyard series of hills just next to the main entrances to the complex. Or it could be a level connected to another sub-level with various tombs and features leading down, instead of the surface map included with the module.

So it's great in that sense. Good work, man.

Whereas an unfathomably deep campaign dungeon is really the only reason I'd have to play D&D ever again.

Welcome to the adult swim.

No slight taken, at all - just a note of explanation. I love vertical dungeons too, just needed a change of pace :)
