So has anyone checked out the critical role campaign setting Tal'Dorei!

Any good? Worth recommending?

My mate is looking to start a new 5e game and kinda fancies the idea of a blank slate setting for the group.

He should just make his own!

Frankly, I've never understood the general praise for Critical Role. Sure, they do voices. But the game (and the world) itself seems bland to me. Granted I'm confident they're going to flesh it all out, so we'll see.

He has kids and extra family responsibility so not really an option. It's prep and play or create a world. And if no one used precreated worlds talislanta and star Wars wouldn't see much love.

For me it sounds like a very generic setting and he'd be as well off using one of the 2e ones but I said I'd ask.

Understood.

There's a lot of setting material out there. He looking for generic D&D-style fantasy? Or something specific?

His words to me were D&D with pizazz.

I think he wants something recognisable but with some punch. I guess like Everton for 3e.

Did you mean Everstone?

I trust he wants a dedicated 5e game? Not something that requires him to convert?

Llew ap Hywel

Doh I mean Eberron.

I think if it's eyeball convertible he'd be ok but 5e out of the gate would be easier.

Here's a good review/overview I think. The drows/underdark sounds like the most original element and I've heard good things about their take on the fey.

5e with lots of setting-colored zip and fluff that doesn't veer too much from standard...Scarred Lands 5e.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Sounds like it might work for him. Thanks.
