Just a thought on the sales surge on Amazon.

I feel a lot of people were on the fence concerning the new edition. The promotion by WOTC wasn't really helping assuage fears. We were taking a wait and see approach. The breaking of street date allowed the fence sitting internet world (ENworlders, RPGnetters, etc) to see that the system wasn't the disaster many were predicting. :eek:

We didn't know what the system was like and were unwilling to buy sight unseen. Thanks to the leaks we now know. The 'maybes' have converted into sales.

I just bought the core three rule books off Amazon, and got the slowest shipping they had (to save some bucks). The books should be in my hands by June 10th. :) I suspect my group will only be playing 4e in the short-term, but it'll be interesting to give it a test-drive...

So, the vast majority of the preorders are from people without infraweb presence.
Equating presence on the internet with presence on those three forums is inaccurate. The release of 4e was on slashdot, PC Mag, even Forbes. Then, of course, there's the Amazon sales rankings themselves. Also, "posters" on each of those sites are not necessarily the majority.

Also, does anyone know the actual sales figures for Amazon? Ranking tells you little when the only things ahead of you are a White House tell-all and the last book in a series of young adult vampire novels.

Fair enough, but I didn't say people just visit rpg message boards. The guys from my group do visit WotC website occasionally to check up on news and free maps and stuff, but they have little interest in message boards of any kind... too much Xbox 360 playing going on. Everyone I know over the age of 12 has internet access and uses it, especially the gamers. Only one other guy in my group shows any interest in many games other than DnD (although I've talked them into trying True20 once so far, and we've played a campaign of ASoIaF, and everyone knows about CoC), but they all keep up on DnD info. Our DM had subscriptions to Dungeon and Dragon for years, and has almost the entire collection of DnD minis.
