Hello Friends,

My computer had a crash back in October - and only today did I manage to find these forums again.

Here is the situation or ''problem' (challenge?) : My Most loyal player over the past 20 years has a rare form of cancer - and I Really have to start a new RPG campaign soon and I am running out of time.
For various reasons the people in the two previous campaigns are mostly not available or are too far away.

In early October her doctor said she had 9 to 12 months to live - so with luck or 'god' we have from now til maybe mid August.

She was in both my GURPS Traveller campaign in 2003 to 2008 and my GURPS Star Trek Campaign (2010 to 2013)

The trick maybe coming up with something playable that is fun for the last two or three game sessions that she ever plays. It will probably be some kind of science fiction - she never really was fond of the "D&D" type tropes and cliches.
I am thinking of something that uses 4th edition GURPS rules and a modified version of the TRSVELLER setting.

I'm sorry to hear this. Circumstances in mind, go out with a laugh.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is very smartly written and has tons of ideas that can be used in a short RPG campaign, if you based your games on that then it could be the best possible way to go. Stick with what system she knows (GURPS) and borrow from the sourcebooks (because GURPS had the best sourcebooks on the market).

For added inspiration, take a look at The Orville as well. It is also very smartly written and occasionally more Star Trek than Star Trek.

I hope that helps.
"Meh."

Pat

If you need something lighter at some point, Toon might be a fun break. Or since you want SF, Teenagers from Outer Space.

Jeff, thank you for the suggestions. My friend has not seen "ST Lower Decks", but she did Love "the Orville" show. In many ways "Orville" is what might have happened if O'Brien and Bashir had wound up working on a starship together - friendly bickering and a decent bit of humor.
There is another friend who has wanted to game with the one I'm talking about for years - but we never quite worked out the scheduling of it all.
I am half thinking of using the old Leif Ericcson' starship design as a ship in the campaign - still working out the details on that.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

You can't go wrong with setting a few episodic exploration sessions in early season TNG.

Just when I started to consider playing a Dwarf....  SF.  Wrong genre....

Sorry to hear about your friend.  So sad.
