Title: Must Have Cthulhu RPG Stuffs
Post by: Captain Rufus on March 11, 2009, 04:59:00 AM
As was vaguely mentioned in another thread, I am soon to be FINALLY running Call of Cthulhu, after only having run it as a 1 shot back in 93-94, and 2 times I fit adventures over into a different game.  Luckily CoC lets old editions be 98% compatible with later ones (cuz there really isn't much different IIRC) anyhow, meaning my old stuff is good with anything new I might purchase.

Well I plan on running it in a late 80s timeframe.

What books should I look into?

As it stands my collection is as such:
Call of Cthulhu 5th ed.
Keeper's Kit and Screen
Blood Brothers 1 and 2
Delta Green, plus Countdown and Eyes Only
Cthulhu Now
The Stars are Right!
Escape From Innsmouth
Horror on the Orient Express
Keeper's Companion
Secrets of Japan
Grimrock Isle
Midnight Harvest
Unspeakable Oath 11-17
Worlds of Cthulhu 1-4

What else is good and reasonably priced for the game and worth getting?  I sadly am out of the Cthulhu loop though I know there are a ton of monograph releases and the like.

I might be getting either Malleus Monstorum or Keeper's Companion 2 tomorrow at the shop whilst playing the Warhammer 40K.  Are either one any good?

Howabout Basic Roleplaying?  Is it worth getting for rules mods alone?  For spells and whatnot?  (Its gonna be less high SAN loss than your average CoC.  Probably half loss rounded down.)  What about Mongoose Runequest?  Similar enough to use some stuff?  Howabout my old copy of Runequest 3rd?

I really should pay more attention when I listen to Yog Radio about this sort of thing, but I sadly have not, and thus am asking for any good recommendations yall might have.

Masks of Nyarlathotep is the obvious one missing from your list there. Mountains of Madness too.

Dreamlands is some decent stuff if you want to venture there. Pretty book, pretty map.

One of my players kind of wants to go Dreamlands stuff.  More because the PC sheets I printed off had a Dream skill and he wants to do dream related stuff, less because of any knowledge of the Dreamlands and more just because it sounds interesting to him.  Does the Dreamlands stuff cover that sort of dream type stuff, or is it just Lovecraft's Dreamlands setting?

It basically covers Lovecraft's Dreamlands setting, but, if I remember correctly, it also covers what one can do with their dreams as well.

Yes, I'd also support the Dreamlands, big time. BTW, is there much difference between the latest and earlier editions of Dreamlands?

I like the dreamlands too, but, as I've mentioned before it has one of the most railroady adventure I've ever seen in it- by Sandy Peterson, no less.
Anyway, regardless of the system you're going to use, I'd have a look at CoC D20. It has the best GM advice section I've ever read.

I'm not sure what the earlier edition of Dreamlands is like. I rather limit my CoC collection the way I limited myself to snorting coke only once a year.

I like it, I know I like it, I just don't want it to be a problem.

Could you go in to a little more depth about what you meant by this...

Sure, the second half of the book is devoted to explaining how to structure a good horror adventure- and for my money is applicable to a good many other genres as well. It gives a pretty cool suggestions on how to dispense information in a way that builds atmosphere,  and how to build and resolve tension. The creature section is cool too, virtually every monster statblock come with an adventure hook of one sort or another. There are good ideas about how to pace a campaign, and a lot of ideas for campaign types, as well as a good bit of stuff on the various historical periods that the game traditionally works with (1920's, 1950's, present day, ect...).  And much much more, really.
I've never sued straight up D20 for anything (I use True20 for horror/pulp style games) and I still rank it up amongst my favorite RPG possessions.
