This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Genres/Sub-genres: What been covered, what needs to be?

So.  Plenty of RPGs out there, most of them taking on a genre, subgenre, or multiple ones.  To list what's already been covered would be a pretty long list, so I'll just ask this:

a)  What genre/subgenre hasn't been covered by an RPG?

b)  Which could/should be covered better/more?

The problem with the ones highlighted is for some reason a lot of players seem to have issues with structured authority creeping into their escapism. Military ones that do exist often have loose command structures (Twilight 2000, the RCES of Traveller: TNE, etc.).

I haven't seen any issues yet with In Harm's Way, but it's a new game. I have plans for several more military/espionage games using the same system - IHW:The Great Game, IHW:Aces in Spades, IHW:Uncommon Valor, and a StarCluster MilSF game, so we'll see.

Well, most movie or book characters of the genres mentioned have problems with authority, too. That seems to be a general characteristic of modern storytelling.

Not that I would like to see it, but is there a game that emulates a slightly odd school experience, as done with Harry Potter and its imitators? I know there's some sourcebook for a mage academy for D20 and some thematic stuff about normal high school (which seems to be an American obsession)...

RPGPundit

There were a number of "wizard's schools" products. One was Redhurst, I believe; for D20.  There was also a seperate RPG called Broomstix which was a clear and obvious ripoff of Harry Potter (if I remember it was a free online RPG).

Finally, the Glantri sourcebook for basic D&D had everything you needed to run a "Harry potter" campaign in a fantasy kingdom of wizards YEARS before Harry Potter came out.

Hmm - it's a combination of alt-history, Military SF, and Espionage. The SF is rather hard, too. :D
