This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Monte Cook's WoD is d20 V3.5

So, WoD people are going to be more angsty than normal. :D

It will be curious to gauge the reaction from the WW boards and such.

Wasn't Monte done with RPG design & stuff for a while?  Or does that happen after this?

This was one of his two final projects set to come out after announcing his retirement from the field.  The other is an adventure module that Goodman Games is publishing, IIRC.

last year he mentioned that he had one more big rpg project  to complete before he went into novels an such. I'm guessing this was it.

I like the way it doesn't say what it is - WOD is there in big letters, but whats that(and it could be W.D, I guess - is that skull an O if you don't know it is)? Well, okay, it says in tiny letters.

But Monte Cook? BIG LETTERS!!!

I think they may think he's a feature.
Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

If I've ever read or used anything by Mr. Cook, I'm not aware of it. But I know his name is spoken of in reverential tones by some, and the fact that he's gracing us with one last RPG before he "goes into novels"? Wish I could just "go into novels". Somehow its not that easy for me. :)

So, what's he done that I might know about? And not as a team-member, but just him alone.

I have no idea what "third Edition revised rules" means.  DOes it mean d20?  Or does it mean the oWoD system?

Hey, so finally it's out. I can hear the cries of the scions of dimness 'til here...

And I kinda like the cover. Apart from the rock star designer title. Monte certainly knows his D20 system and if he's doing a job as suited to the "genre" as he did with Chtulhu D20, I might even look into playing a katana-wielding vampire again ;)

Werekoala, just take a look at the Pen & Paper entry for Monsieur Cook. He's worked on the third edition, is listed as the author of the DMG and has done quite a few adventures, most of them quite alright. He's also done his re-imagining of D&D with "Arcana Evolved" (ex-Arcana Unearthed), heavily based on Stephen Donaldsons books. (So he's certainly no stranger to angsty suffering)

It's the only legal way to say "based on D&D 3.5". You're not allowed to use the D&D trademark for advertising your own game...

Well, 3E was a team effort.  His Book of Eldritch Might was one of the early classics in 3rd party support for the new edition.  He's also the guy who put PDF publishers on the map (though the efforts of S. John Ross should not be ignored on that front).  I'm rather fond of Cook's Arcana Evolved/Arcana Unearthed line of products.  Ptolus is too rich for my blood but everyone I know who has a copy has liked it.

And his publishing company is named after one of the best one shot villains to ever appear on the Superfriends.  That's got to count for something.

Awwwwww shiiiiiiiiit....

That is going to put the cat amongst the (angsty, eyeliner wearing) pigeons. ;)

EDIT TO ADD: Of course, attentive people could have seen this coming. Monte Cook has gone on record in the past as saying that the D20 system is the only one he's really interested in working with these days.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Does anyone know any details about the book ? I'm definitely getting it...but some details would be nice.

That cover art is weird.  Imagine seeing it before the logo and cover blurb was added.  Does that look like a World of Darkness cover?  It looks post-apocalyptic to me.  And why is there that strange vortex of light on a product about darkness?  Also, is the official name of the game really Monte Cook's WoD?  Try pronouncing that.  Inside, see Monte Cook's wad!  Or maybe the word in the circle is WPB, since someone felt the logo needed extra lines in strange places.

It's been old news over at the WW forums for a while now.
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".
