This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mongoose to publish a new Traveller version

T4 was Roll a number of dice according to the DIFFICULTY (some of which could be half-D6), rull EQUAL OR UNDER your Attribute+Skill. Scale was the same as CT, so this made attributes a huge factor. Too huge.

T5 previews look basically T4 without the half dice, but with at mechanism that adds more dice to the difficulty if your skill rank is less than the difficulty. Which modestly improves the importance of skill ranks, but attributes are STILL too important, and you have two comparisons to make for each roll. Too gimmicky, IMO.

IMO, the Traveller skill system peaked at MT and went downhill from there.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

One hopes Gareth is feverishly taking notes. :D

Seriously, though, CS nailed it. Also, dicepool roll under doesn't just happen to combine two of my personal dislikes into one mechanic. It also, purely on a gut level, doesn't have the Traveller feel. D&D is d20 roll over. Traveller is 2d6 roll over. Imagine dicepool roll under for D&D. Madness!

I'm travelling (no pun intended) around England at the moment, and away from regular internet access, but I'm reading threads here/at rpg.net/enworld/CotI/Mongoose etc, and yes, I'm taking notes.

beeber

Then please consider this suggestion. One of the primary means of identifying Traveller used to be the David Dietrick artwork on the covers and the interiors, later Traveller products have moved away from that practise. Please consider having him provide some of the art for this latest version of Traveller to provide a connection to the original version of the game.

Also, although this may not involve you specifically and should be passed on up to the brand manager, when this comes out as OGL and TLL - please include some language in the OGL and TLL that would help to prevent unscrupulous Third Party publishers from using the Traveller brand name to sell a product that was sensationalist crud. What I'd like to see avoided is the situation that allowed Third Party d20 publishers to put out products like The Book of Erotic Fantasy and the Blood and Faith PDF. I understand that this may be impossible with an OGL, but IMHO the above two products cheapened the d20 license and I wouldn't like to see Traveller cheapened in the same way.

Just my two cents worth, but I'm sure I'll have some more as time passes since I'm a loudmouth. :D

Hey, best of luck with this.  I know there's a lot of folks that will want this done in a certain way, or not this way, or neither of those ways, but this way.  Hang in there, and have fun. :)

Really? Wasn't it "This is Free Trader Beowulf, calling anyone..." on a black and red background? :D

True, but my suggestions could be worse.

Like I think the Official Nickname for Mongoose Traveller should be "Riki-Tiki-Traveller". :haw: :D

IMO too.  It was easy to understand and flexible yet retained most of the CT flavor.

I think new Traveller will be a tough sell.  Most Traveller fans already have a favorite version, so convincing them to switch won't be easy.  For people who haven't already played Traveller (which is most young players), it's going to be hard to get them interested in an old game name.

M'eh. I already have a few editions of Traveller.

The more I read about T5, it sounds like it will be using dice pools. Since RTT (Mongoose Traveller, or Rikki Tikki Traveller) is meant to be a "basic" version of T5, I have to conclude it will also use dice pools.

Of all the mechanics out there, dice pools seem the most un-Traveller to me. I hope they stick with the good old 2d6.

well, with the OGL we can just make our TU 2d6, yes?

i like RTT as an abbreviation!:haw:

Maybe, maybe not.  This is what has me sort of biting my nails.  Like with the d20 OGL, there are certain features that must be included in order to qualify under the OGL.  For instance, something as simple as using a d20 (vs a d10 or any other type of die) is a requirement.  We'll have to wait and see how RTT is going to go.

!i!

hrm :raise:  well, there's quite a bit of time yet before anything will come out.  i'll just play around with CT & MT until we get more info on RTT/T5.
