This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Our gaming group has started in on the podcast kick.

Just wanted to let you all know about the newest podcast on the block, this one focusing on gaming in the modern era. Check out Accidental Survivors at http://accidentalsurvivors.libsyn.com/ .

Accidental Survivors is a podcast focusing on modern games. While we will often default to d20 Modern, because that is what we are most familiar with, we will try to make our comments and suggestions as generic as possible. Each podcast is going to include any news we feel might be of interest to modern gamers. This news portion will include a quick encapsulation of the story, and then some comments from the hosts regarding applying this to a game, or impact on gamers. Then we'll get into our feature. The feature will be a concept or idea as general as Martial Arts or as specific as the billy-club used as a subdual weapon. We'll discuss our thoughts and ideas regarding the feature topic and how it applies to modern gaming. We'll always have inspiration time, where we'll look at something specific, such as a news story, a book, a movie, and discuss how one can draw inspiration for a campaign.

This is our first effort and we realize we had some issues with the sound levels.  But we've been working on it and think we have it ironed out for the next one. I'd appreciate if anyone has the time to give it a listen to and send us your comments.

Total running time is about an hour.

An hour?  At that length, you should throw in a sex scene to keep it interesting.  To keep it with modern rpgs, you could have spy vs. villain or cultist vs investigator sex.

Would you really want to hear 3 guys simulating that?

"Simulating"?  It doesn't get much more homo-erotic than three guys drily discussing d20 Modern for an hour at a time.  Anything more than 20 minutes and it becomes a podcast about repressed sexual longing with perhaps a slight subtext of roleplaying game.

Wait...

WHAT!?

Still and an hour? Might wan't to do some editting.

Is this naming your group thing an American fad, or do other people do it?

Mr. Analytical

It's a Knights of the Dinner table thing isn't it?  those groups all have names.  Maybe in America gaming groups get together and have dance-offs like in West Side Story.

"Oh no! The Red Mutineers, their GM has 2 years modern, 4 years tap! Retreat!"

Bagpuss

I suppose the intro won't be as long next time.

Up to the Crank discussion. Erm the concept of the poison just sounds stupid.

The podcast hate here is...amusing.  But I guess it's vogue for this board to be anachronistic.

I'll give it a lsiten, there aren't many modern gaming podcasts out there.

Need to find that link to the Parkour video someone mentioned.

Found it...

See you have at least one listener.

I don't think there is so much a podcast hate as podcast, disinterest. Podcast are like listen to other peoples conversations, it's much more interesting to actually be involved in a conversation (like using a messageboard) than just listen to someone elses.

Yes, I echo the sentiment.  One of the things that the internet has really brought home is that there's not that much of a gap between media-recognised "experts" and fans.

So why would you want to download and listen to some guys talk about games when you probably read all the same websites they do and hang out on all the same message boards and, unlike articles or columns, you can't really scan a podcast.

As a result, in my experience, the podcast format only works when you ARE an expert and you can talk wittily and lucidly about something you love.  I'm not so much disparaging the OP as the format in general, I only subscribe to Mark Kermode's film reviews (which I recommend to everyone as they are fucking great) and In Our Time (which is also great but not currently on).

The content list seems pretty good it's just... an hour?  Good on ya for going off and being creative though.

I don't know...I like 'em.  I like listening about gaming stuff.  It's good in the car. Ogre Cave Audio Report is probably my favorite, it's a bunch of guys who talk shop about the "industry." At least one of them owns a store, and they talk about Cons they go to from a business perspective.

Of course media defines our "experts."  Otherwise we wouldn't have any.  And there have to be some, there is design going on here by respected authors.  I just don't think that podcasts can all be crap (although I will agree that a whole lot of them are crap).

I'm probably just more hardcore than the rest of you...:D

Bingo. I'm not into passive entertainment much. I can't watch much television, even the good stuff like history channel or discover channel. I get impatient to go do something.

That or you have a decent in car entertainment system, personally I have a radio/cassette from about 8 years ago, and the cassette deck broke about 6 years ago. Listening to them while travelling makes sense, I just don't travel enough, and don't have the facility to listen while travelling.

I design and write RPGs and supplements. Since 2002, I've written and illustrated 7 RPGs and 23 supplements, and done illos for half a dozen more. How can I get that done while listening to podasts, and who's hardcore, buddy? :D
