Despite what modern furries may want, D&D was designed as a humanocentric game, with humans being the dominant race and demihumans occupying their little niche corners with their less adaptablr cultures. Flash forward to what the game has been turned into where everyone wants to play furries and bizarre shit like sentient rocks. There was never anything stopping a DM from including different non-human cultures in the game world. D&D is a DIY type of game, not a hard coded video game. Make and play whatever your group thinks will be fun.

I played Gamma World usually as the only human in the party. Why? Because its fun and humans get some perks the others do not. Same for Metamorphosis Alpha.

Even with D&D most of my PCs are human as its more fun to play off the non-humans. Though one of my more recent PCs was a Harengon Monk for some weirdness.

Both sides of this idiot argument are about as unimaginative as it gets. Play what the hell you want or what the setting allows. If Im runn ing the old Conan stuff for D&D then your options are human and thats it. If Im running some of the Polyhedron settings for d20 Modern your options are human and thats it. In others its open to anything. Same for 5e. Forgotten Realms is about as open as it gets.

I was going to note that WotC missed a chance for Mexican themed Tortles and Tabaxi as that was a theme with Red Steel. Which was part of Mystara.
