Title: maxing a stat
Post by: tleilaxu on March 18, 2006, 02:35:11 PM
say a character starts out at 1st level with an 18 in an ability score. over the course of levelling up to 18, they put all 5 point increases into that stat. in addition, manual of stat increase +5 is found or craft. This would make the ability score 28. If a +6 stat booster item is used, it brings the stat up to 34. Is this all kosher as per RAW? Are there any other things I have forgotten which could further boost the statistic?

There is no upper limit to what you can have as a stat.  ONe thing you need to think about is different types of bonuses.  Since most magic items provide a enhancement bonus to stats.  You also have inherent like the tomes of stat increase and sacred or profane are really the only ones taht apply to stat increases.

The Spell Compendium has owl's insight, a 5th level druid spell which grants an insight bonus equal to half caster level to Wisdom. Only lasts an hour, though.

By default, 36 is the best you can go at 20th level (start with a +2 racial adjustment, roll an 18, put all your stat increase there, find a +5 tome/manual or a lot of wish scrolls, and grab a +6 item).

However you can go farther with the proper choices. For example, a half-orc barbarian 9/sorcerer 1/dragon disciple 10 can have 44 Strength this way, raising to 48 when raging.

And of course there's polymorph. Dire bears and fire giants are popular choices for Strength-boosting purposes.

Raising your wisdom to ridiculously high levels is much harder, on the other hand.

Quote from: Harry JoyIsn't Owl's Wisdom the one ability buff NO one ever uses?

Actually, it's useful for clerics, druids, paladins, rangers, and other divine spellcasters. It was also useful to psions-seers before the revision...

Make sure you take Enlarge Person as one of your Sorcerer spells, that bumps your strength up another +2.

And if you take levels in frenzied berserker, that rage bonus goes up to +6 when frenzying.

Then, you go find a vampire, and get Con drained to 0, coming back as a vampire yourself... That's +6.

Oh!  And then you go get yourself bitten by Were Dire Bear!  That's another +20, when you're in hybrid or animal form...

Ah yes!... It's the elusive Enlarged Vampiric Were Dire Bear Half-Orc Barbarian/Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple/Frenzied Berserker with a Strength score of 78, when frenzying in hybrid form.

:D

I'm not sure a vampire can become a lycanthrope and vice-versa. Most DMs would frown on that kind of things... Can the lycanthrope template be slapped on an undead?

Nope, only humanoids and giants.

say we're talking intelligence.

18 starting
+5 for levelling
+5 through tome

how about +3 for ageing?
what about if she becomes a lich? does she get another +2?
or do those overlap with the tome bonus?

I'd think stat boosts aquired through templates are non-typed and thus stack with anything...

Fenzied Berserker gets a separate bonus from rage, "frenzy" of course.  So with Frenzy giving you a +6 to Strength and Rage giving you a +4 to Strength.  That boils down to a who,e lot of whopass.  Not to mention teh extra attack you get from Frenzy when doing a full attack.

Trust me I made an NPC using the Frenzied Berserker  PrC and he kicked all sorts of ass.  Really put the party in its place.  Had a tendency to rip off pieces of buildings and use them as weapons.  :D

Hurr, hurr...  Mostly, I was joking.  :p

But, for the record...

Quote“Lycanthrope” is a template that can be added to any humanoid or giant (referred to hereafter as the base creature).

Size and Type: The base creature’s type does not change, but the creature gains the shapechanger subtype.
Quote“Vampire” is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature).

Size and Type: The creature’s type changes to undead (augmented humanoid or monstrous humanoid).
Humanoid lycanthropes can become vampires, but vampires cannot become lycanthropes.

They couldn't in "3.0" as shapechanger was a type rather than a subtype.

No, the lycantrhopy template cannot be added to an undead creature.

HOWEVER.

The Vampire template CAN be added to a lycanthrope.

It's all in the order you do it... :D
